From the NYT article:

The Trump administration plans to slash refugee admissions to a record low level in the upcoming year, reserving a bulk of the limited slots for white Afrikaners from South Africa and others facing “unjust discrimination,” according to people familiar with the matter and documents obtained by The New York Times.

President Trump is expected to lower the ceiling on refugee admissions to 7,500, a drastic decrease from the cap of 125,000 set by the Biden administration last year, according to a presidential determination dated Sept. 30 and signed by Mr. Trump.

The new limit would effectively shut the door to thousands of families waiting in camps around the world and refocus a program meant to provide sanctuary for those fleeing war and famine to support mostly white South Africans.

NY Times authors are illiterate. What is “a bulk of the limited slots”? They didn’t even quote a number from the alleged documents.

OP here. No. My take is not that only white refugees will be allowed to apply. My title that began "Only whites need apply" is hyperbolic for effect (because that what it feels like), but I said nothing else about the topic. I just quoted the NYT article referenced in the tweet.

If you feel the title was "disinformation," you are welcome to ask Jeff to change it. I would suggest the following as an alternative title: "Changes to refugee program will prioritize White South Africans." I think it is accurate and fair.

PS. It's rich that you would be offended by posts on an anonymous message board that you think engage in disinformation when our very own government lies to us EVERY SINGLE DAY right out in the open and unashamedly. Not to mention the MAGA trolls on this board who spread lies, conspiracy theories, and worse all the time.

Not the OP but when refugee programs only allow white people to apply that's what it means. Trump has given refugee priority to white Afrikaners and has frozen the program for anyone else.

Not sure what that has to do with disinformation and online platforms.

My own position is that online disinformation shouldn't be censored but I do believe it's fair and reasonable to label it as false or disinfo and post a fact check when it's proven to be false, and especially if it's willfully and maliciously misleading, such as election disinfo or other types of things that are genuinely harmful to society. That's not censorship, despite right wingers who claimed it is.

Thanks for the reminder, PP. The US refugee program has been suspended since January 2025 and is currently accepting white South Africans (Afrikaners) under a specific executive exception, while blocking most other admissions. Going forward, the government seems to be planning to 1) lower refugee quotas overall and 2) prioritize white South Africans when granting refugee status (although not exclusively). It sounds a lot like a "whites are preferred" policy even though they will no doubt accept a certain number of non-whites.

White South Africans are about 7-8 percent of the population and own around 70 percent of the land.
