I don’t know what the “right” number is and what it is usually based on. That’s outside my pay grade.

What I do know, however, is that our US refugee program is suspended per a January 2025 Trump executive order, halting most processing and arrivals except for limited exceptions like white Afrikaners from South Africa. I also know that there were thousands of preapproved applicants who have not been allowed to come here, including Afghani allies, who served as interpreters and in other roles supporting our troops. I find that unacceptable, don’t you?

I don’t understand why this isn’t a bigger deal.

They have found this one tiny subset of what was previously a racially oppressive white supremacist regime to prioritize. The fact that this is what anyone wants shows that America is fundamentally wildly racist at its core

YES!!! For everyone who always talks about coming in the “right” way, this is yet another example of how this administration makes that notion next to impossible and shits all over our legacy of success as a multicultural country of opportunity. We FAIL when we kill all paths to legal entry.

The US refugee program has been suspended since January 2025 and is currently accepting white South Africans (Afrikaners) under a specific executive exception, while blocking most other admissions. Going forward, the government seems to be planning to 1) lower refugee quotas overall and 2) prioritize white South Africans when granting refugee status (although not exclusively). It sounds a lot like a "whites are preferred" policy even though they will no doubt accept a certain number of non-whites.

So white South Africans who are not Afrikaners need not apply?

This is the OP. Yes, that's what my research indicates. The Trump admin has suspended the entire refugee program EXCEPT FOR Afrikaners, who have a specific carve out in EO 14204 (2/7/25).

Section 2(b)(ii) of that Executive Order states:
“The Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security shall, consistent with applicable law, prioritize humanitarian relief, including admission and resettlement through the United States Refugee Admissions Program, for Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unjust racial discrimination, including racially discriminatory property confiscation.”

It's crazy and unprecedented in the history of the US refugee program to ONLY admit refugees from one very narrow racial/ethnic group from one specific country to the exclusion of all others.

There are not. It is incredibly difficult to get a green card and as in recent years the difficulty has increased dramatically while the numbers allowed in has decreased exponentially. Signed, legal immigrant who thinks the numbers above should be the inverse of what they are now.

"True, every president sets a cap—but Trump slashed it to a historic low, way below past norms. In fact, he slashed it to half of his all-time low cap from his first term, which was 15,000 in 2021. So the super low number is in fact very different.

What’s also different as the bizarre prioritizing of Afrikaners, a group not facing large-scale persecution.

Another difference is that in the past, normal presidents based these caps on geopolitical conditions around the world, which obviously varied somewhat from year to year. There are enough things going on around the world to warrant a higher cap this year. But Trump seems to be basing the cap on the whims of Stephen Miller and the bizarre fixation on Afrikaners on the urging of Elon Musk.

So in fact, Trump IS doing things differently than other presidents. And that’s because he’s not a normal president and does not care about observing past norms or basing his jdecisions on reality.
