| Our DD attending advanced and positional clinics at Libero Virginia. We have great experience so far with improvement during a summer and fall but wanted to hear anyone’s experience during a travel team season? We are looking for National Open Level team. How hard is to get on the team and if you make do they continue to work on players skills during a season? Is it also true that in the fee is included postseason tournaments and practices to attend at the AAU Or/and USAV national (looks like no other club offer that)? Thank you |
| No experience with being on the team, but a con we see is the amount of hours they practice. This could be a pro for some. It’s far more than any other club. It is a huge time commitment for both the player and family. |
| With that practice schedule, the Libero club fee doesn't seem so excessive anymore. But it does require a lot of commitment. With that practice schedule you would also expect Libero to be ranked better. I am not sure why I cannot find rankings for their U16, U17, and U18 teams. |
| I don’t think they have a team for U18, or we don’t see one listed. But true, we don’t see a ranking either for U16 or U17. Any idea why? |
| Last year they decided to increase number of younger teams to build the base and because of gym space they had only up to age 15’s teams. This year they are opening another gym at the Dulles Mall and they are adding 16’s and 17’s. They are consistent of playing at CHRVA Bid regional for most ages. Yes it’s true they don’t charge anything additional for attending nationals. It’s for years known that kids started at Libero will get offer to play at any high competitive club in the area. My DD did 4 season with them and looking forward to new one. To answer your question they have had about 75-80% returning players so it is challenging to get on the team especially they don’t look to have 15 players on the roster as many clubs do, they would run season even with 9 competitive players so play time is maxed. They come to the issue when the injuries happened so that’s why ranking maybe is not as should be but they managed very well to teach players to play different positions and to be all around players. Head Coach/Club director is from Serbia and use to be coach of the youth national team, he is working positional clinics on Fridays. My DD been attending many camps and clinics at the area and colleges but you won’t find that much details in teaching as he does. Another plus is if you are business owner you can advertise at their gym/website and claim on your tax returns but you actually pay for your daughter tuition 100%. Good luck this season and hope this help many parents to find great place for kids to develop volleyball skills. |
| Bumping this to see if anyone else has more experience. DD is considering trying out for a team. We are looking at the tournament schedule and it is a lot of travel and flights, which would be a con for us. If you were on the open/travel team last year, did you find the extra travel worth it? We don't want to travel for the sake of travel. |
| Travelling for the sake of travelling is one of our major concerns with volleyball clubs. There are few teams that travel for a good reason, all the others only pretend to be competitive. The girls like to travel and spend time together, but you have no life during the volleyball season. I wish there were more options for teams that spend their time competing locally. In terms of tournament schedule, MVSA2 or MVSA3 would be ideal for us, but my DD could not make it. To play volleyball at some decent level, you need to target the top teams in other clubs - and most of them travel for the sake of travelling. |
| Went to a recent invite only clinic and there was almost no one there. Not good sign. They advertised older teams last year and apparently cancelled when nobody tries out then someone said at clinics. Talk to parents at clinics. Hoe many are returners? In my dd age group none were. That seemed not good. It is a lot of hours and days to practice which sounds good unless you want a family life. U too the new gym is open I don’t count on it. So many times a club says one thing and then it doesn’t happen on time or is very late. |
It’s exhausting and expensive. Zero life outside of volleyball. All those out of town tournaments are ann exercise in chasing bids. Great if you like the travel experience and non stop volleyball. Some kids are ready for that. The extra clinic time they offer is really an expectation/ mandatory not an option. It offers a lot for people/players looking to get into the big bid tournament scene and ready to invest in hard core training. Many players move on to other better clubs which I suppose is a testament to their clubs training- able to move to bigger or better clubs. But also speaks to their ability to retain players. If a club is amazing and has a solid team or teams, why would they not come back year over year? Several eastern euro coaches who live up to the reputation that coaches from that part of the world have; again that’s a preference or not. They seem behind the 8 ball recruiting solid experienced coaches. Be sure you know and meet who the coaches are for your age group. Talk with them, ask good questions. They do have a great reputation for fundamentals and there is no way your kid won’t get better with all those touches. Depends on the environment you are looking for. |
With our club we can barely handle 2 practices per week and all the weekend tournaments (about two per month). It's exhausting just to think that you can double that. There is no reason to train that hard unless you hope to play in college. My DD plays for fun and she knows that she has no chance to play in college (she is too short for this sport, plus she doesn't work that hard anyway). This is a way for her to stay active, make friends, while playing a sport that she enjoys. It doesn't make sense for us to spend so much time and money on club volleyball. |
Then Libero nat/ travel team is def not for you! Def not for everyone. The travel and play schedule is a lot. They have some regional teams that travel less. Some people also want a WINNING team and fewer practices and fun and family time. You either start with a winning team in that case or hope other clubs have the luck of pulling together a winning roster and make magic happen. Libero nat is for sure for intensely devoted volleyball players. |
Thank you, Captain Obvious! I wouldn't have guessed without your thoughtful analysis. We are not looking for a WINNING team that practices less. Volleyball is a hobby for my DD and we all know that she won't play in college. Two practices per week is good enough for this type of players to get their fun and exercise. We want a decent team that plays locally at their decent level, without wasting time and money travelling for the sake of travelling. This is the profile of most players in the area and there are no good options for them. |
| Wow rude much? Why are you even posting here if you’re not interested in a team that practices that much? I’m sure there is room for your snark in other posts about teams who suit your needs. Have a blessed day. |
Don't know about rude, but about as snarky as the comment that "Libero nat/ travel team is def not for you!" |
| I’m not that poster and DD is looking for a travel/open team and seriously considering Libero. We are interested in hearing any other feedback from parents with other actual experience. She’s also trying out at other clubs and will have to compare options if there are any. |
