I’ve never had a therapist that helped me with much

Anonymous
I’ve had individual therapy and couples therapy and tried different types of therapies.

What am I doing wrong? Am I just too messed up to help?

My issues are generalized anxiety, social anxiety and anger issues.

Therapists are somewhere between placebos and con artists.

Did you take medication too? The research suggests that for some people it's the combination of meds and therapy that works. Some people need the medication to be open to the strategies and able to apply them.

I'm sure this thread will turn into therapist bashing too and yes, there are some poor therapists. The thing is if you truly want to get better I don't think a bunch of people venting about bad therapists helped. Yes, the exist and yes sometimes you have to shop around, but if you have been to a bunch, which it sounds like you have then I would also be looking at finding the right medication and the right combo of meds and therapy.

Op yes I’ve been on medication and I have shopped around a lot. I’ve worked with therapists for years. Nothing really helped. In fact, my dh and I have had two couples therapists. One we worked with on and off for 2+ years. One we worked with for about a year.

In other words, meds help you. Therapists help themselves with their fees.

Most people do not understand therapy. Most do NOT need therapy but they have been told they need therapy. -signed a therapist

Do you have borderline personality disorder?

How hard do you actually work on yourself and the issues the therapists bring up. A couple bad therapists is one thing. Multiple therapists and none helping usually means the problem lies with you.

You likely have a personality disorder which therapy really doesn't help much with. You may learn some strategies to deal with things but that requires a lot of effort on your part.

Therapists don't actually do anything. It isn't surprising that they aren't going to help.

I heard therapy described once like religion and that made a lot of sense to me. You have to believe in it to get something out of it and there are lots of different types. All types won’t work for everyone and not everyone can relate to it or get something out of it.

I tried many different therapists and stopped going. I just don’t see the value in it but completely understand how it works for others.

Well I had a therapist who was quite helpful so there are some good ones out there.

What specifically are you doing in your therapy sessions and in between?

It just doesnt feel good to have a positive 50 minutes in therapy and then a drop back into your regular life with nothing really feeling any different. I found more success with alternative and holistic therapies, but ymmv. My psychologist was helpful to an extent (i learned to get my reactions back as I was on mute for a lot of things due to a very fearful up-bringing). She modeled healthy reactions.

But the amount of money I paid her was a real downer, and the therapeutic relationship did a number on me too.

I don't really see therapy as the saving grace i used to. Its so so expensive and it's not really real, and entirely affected by the therapists own life circumstances, beliefs, and values.
