WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Tuesday the U.S. has carried out a strike in the southern Caribbean against a drug-carrying vessel that departed from Venezuela and was operated by the Tren de Aragua gang. The president said in a social media posting that 11 people were killed in the rare U.S. military operation in the Americas, a dramatic escalation in the Republican administration’s effort to stem the flow of narcotics from Latin America. Trump also posted a short video clip of a small vessel appearing to explode in flames. Have we ever done interdiction in this manner before??? I know Trump is trying desperately to make Venezuela an invading country, but . . . |

Drug smuggling is bad. NArcoterrorism is bad. Pretty sure blowing up ships from sovereign countries and imposing the death penalty on them is also pretty, pretty bad. |

Without more details, the manner in which this was carried out violates not just international law and would be a war crime, it also violates US law pertaining to drug interdiction in extraterritorial waters. How was the strike carried out? From a warship? Did the drug boat launch a torpedo or ballistic missile at the ship?
Bottom line is you can legally fire to disable a vessel, you can seize it and arrest people on board, and this news is hardly either of those. |

I support intimidating narco traffic, which kills millions every year worldwide, but I don't know whether this operation was legal, and whether this administration did their due diligence in making sure all aboard were guilty of heinous crimes. We do not kill people just because we suspect they're criminals, and we do not kill criminals caught in the act unless they are an immediate threat to life.
So in fact, I'm quite sure this was illegal, and government-sanctioned murder. |

Agreed. We are quite reasonably questioning the veracity of any reports that come out of this administration. The administration that lies about everything. What if they made a mistake, a quite legitimate concern with an idiot like our current Sec of Def, and killed people who weren't drug smugglers. But with them in charge and their constant assault on an independent media, the chances that we will know what really happened in cases like this are small. This should horrify anyone. |

Do you think the average American/MAGA sees them that way? I'm Puerto Rican. A mix of European, Indigenous, and Black. I assure you most Americans can't even wrap their minds around me being American. They certainly don't see me as White. And many would see no issue with me being rounded up with the other "illegals" even though my people have been here for centuries. So yes, Americans will brush this off as not concerning them because these people will not even cross their empathy radar. |

Even if they were doing exactly what the administration says they were, the standard protocol would be to board the ship and arrest the crew, not launch a missile at a bunch of civilians, criminal or otherwise. We don't execute people without trial. |
