Or maybe you could just be honest and admit you're full of crap and have just been regurgitating the company line and are incapable of original thought.

NP here. I'm getting tired of the insults like the post above. Please stop. I think those of us who have been around youth soccer for a while are capable of drawing our own conclusions about the impact, drawbacks, and benefits of the change. It is not all bad or all good in my mind and I'm sure in the minds of many others.

Is it true that NCSL only allows two players "playing up" per team? If that is true, do you think they will nix it to help teams try to stay together?

New PP. I actually would welcome a reasoned discussion of the positive aspects of this change. I don't feel very strongly about it, but it seems to me to be a large amount of hassle for something just isn't going to do all that much. Maybe I am not understanding it.

Peronnally, I don't care that my post bothers you. It bothers me that the other poster comes on here accusing everybody who questions the change as being alarmist and know-nothings (and no, I'm someone different than whoever suggested a petition) but when challenged to identify all of the benefits that he claims to know about, the poster chickens out and runs away from the discussion without providing a single example.

He deserved all the scorn that was heaped upon him.

The age group change smacks of a big F-U from us soccer to the college system. Or they just read gladwell's chapter on hockey and want that relative age effect for their Jan-mar kids, thinking that will magically make us a world power. It doesn't really sound well thought out and certainly hasn't been communicated or explained well, considering the impact it will have.

The small sided changes are nothing new for most of the soccer hotbeds - most are not playing 11v11 on full fields at U9 any more. If anything, it is actually a step backward for soccer in their area with 8v8 being changed to 9v9. Whoever was charged with making the field dimensions was on crack or has never coached in the age group before. The 9s in this area play 7v7 on around 70x45, those will be changed to 47x30. That is going to be a very tight mess. 11/12 here play 8v8 on 75-85x50-60. On the smaller fields they are very tight, but now they will be changed to 75x47 and 9v9. It is going to make for very congested games. It is like they chose field dimensions to fit the max number of games on a full size field (now we fit 2 u9 games on a full field, with the new dimensions you can put 4 games on 1 field), rather than thinking about the space the players need.

So would I ... but I will stop coming here to look for reasoned discussion if all I see about the change is post after post of personal attacks.

HS and college will always be by grade so Gladwell will still favor late Fall birthdays for schools with Fall soccer.

Let's be honest --HS is the pinnacle for most in U.S. Soccer. A small percentage will play in college.

Almost none will play Intetnationally.

The change aligns us with everyone else but that's the only benefit.

With so many different ages on a National or HS team it really makes no difference.

I played Varsity as a Freshmen in HS at 14 with girls that were 17 and 18.

Messi has a June Birthday. Maradona has an October birthday. Pele has an October birthday. Lewandowski has a late August birthday. Ibrahimovic has a late October birthday. Mueller has a September birthday. George Best has a May birthday. Neymar has a February birthday.

Gladwell doesn't apply to soccer.

If you have skill and talent it doesn't matter what month you were born in for godsakes.

In fact-- I laugh every time I hear some douchey parent talking about their kids 10,000 hours and birthdate. I look at the uncoordinated, goofy parents and think 'hey buddy--you are missing the genetic aspect".

I am the poster you are attacking. I'm not going to spend a lot of time responding to you, because you are rude and don't seem the least bit interested in having a thoughtful discussion on the matter. In response to your accusation above, I'm not accusing anyone who disagrees with my take on the age group issue as being a know-nothing, in fact I've said nothing of the sort. And I spent a significant amount of time upthread defending my position in response to someone who stated that all of us who don't think the age group change is that big of a deal are either ignorant, totally lacking in empathy, thinking only of our own kids, or all of the above.

I did say I thought you were an alarmist. If that hurt your feelings, I'll rephrase and say I think you are exaggerating the potential harm of the age group reclassification. I stand by my earlier comments about the petition, because I don't think that's a practical way to address the issue for anyone with serious concerns about it and it's really annoying to see the person who is pushing it make the exact same comment on every single thread that discusses this matter.

I'll share my thoughts (for what they are worth) on the potential benefits of the change later in response to one of the thoughtful comments by other posters.

Agree 100%.

Men's US soccer program has always sucked because it has always picked solely size and speed with little regard for talent. I see this in the young travel selections. It continues. That is the only reason that principle would apply to US soccer and the rest of the world it doesn't matter the month you were born.

This and 'I really loved watching you play". All these type As read a script for success and sound like a bunch of lemmings on the sidelines.

Yes, and I hope so.

US Youth Soccer has a PDF up on their website documenting how RAE shows up in soccer. I don't think that the statement that RAE doesn't apply to soccer matches with the documented research.
