That's a good thing. Enrollment at Chantilly NEEDS to come down significantly. It would be nice if it came down enough to remove the modulars.

We have no problem with modulars. We are absolutely fine with it.

As in all things, there are others at Chantilly that are not fine with it. There are plenty of families that will be happy to see Chantilly less crowded, mainly the families whose kids are not moved.

A neighborhood school with tight boundaries to allow for a small regular student population, with another small student population centered around aviation and technology that come from across the county. Total enrollment of 1500-1600 kids.

Natural reduction in K-12 population and renovations make the trailers/modulars go away over time.

The school can hold up to 2200 with the renovations they are doing. They will populate it with roughly 2000 students as planned.

Can you share a source for the assertion the renovated school will hold 2200? I heard Erik Gordon say 2000 after the shell buildings were renovated at one meeting.

Two of the first 4 Western Scenarios A, B, C, and D populated Skyview with just under 2200 kids. The slides from the meeting during that timeframe listed the Expected Capacity as 2000(+) and Erik Gordon did mention, "2,000 to 2,200" at least once in that meeting. That was a while ago so maybe the plan has changed to target only 2,000.

The 14 modulars are mostly fine. Chantilly also has 9 trailers and some of them are really old. They certainly have mold. They should be retired and FCPS should not spend any money to replace them with the new capacity in the western region.

Two of the initial “Western” scenarios resulted in 2068 and 2142 students. All three of the “Skyview” scenarios refer to the new school as having a capacity of 2000.

You might not have a problem with modulars, but other families might.

Modulars are fine and it would be especially bizarre to suggest modulars are a problem but having classes or activities in the two current shell buildings at Skyview will be fine.

We will take modulars if it means we can stay at Chantilly. No one wants to be moved out of Chantilly.

No one wants to move out, but plenty of people want the overcrowding fixed. Someone has got to go.

Well, those plenty of people can move their kids. Otherwise, should stop complaining.

Why? Chantilly soldiered through for years with 2900 kids, but now that the enrollment is projected to decline by 300 kids over the next five years “someone has got to go”?

I think what you really mean is “someone has got to go to Skyview.” And then, of course, someone “will have to go” to Westfield to backfill that school.

Not sure they really thought through all the implications before they wrote the big check.

Or the school board could do their jobs and do proper capacity planning. The only reason it's overcrowded is because they neglected to do their job years ago, last time the FCPS owned the Skyview land.

Is your child's school at 130% capacity with a trailer park outside? No? Then maybe you don't get to complain about the new school. Even if they somehow lost 300 kids (highly doubt) they'd still be one of the most overcrowded schools in the county.

Spare us the fake empathy.

Especially not to Westfield

The school is just a building. It’s the people that make it what it is.
