Through patents and million-dollar salaries? Yes, yes, I do. And off the US taxpayer largess, and we still end up paying again when these discoveries are sold back to us. |
Surely, every school-child in the USA still dreams of attending Harvard some day. Surely. |

Someone explained upthread why the system was changed from the government owning all IP for basic research to the researchers having a commercial stake, too. The upshot is that far more research gets commercialized and benefits the public now. This subject is worthy of discussion and debate--somewhere else. What does it have to do with Trump targeting Harvard? |

One could attempt to argue there are no issues with political diversity on campus; that Harvard encourages open dialogue; that free exchange of controversial ideas is respected at Harvard, etc. However, we all know these arguments are not the reality at Harvard.
Whether or not you agree with these things is separate from who should fix these problems. Do you want the federal government to seize control of these things at a private university?!

Harvard's leaders can continue to be in control of their institution, but I'm fine with not giving them more money.
Research grants are not "giving" them money. Grants pay for expert research services.
Expert research can be done at other institutions.
That’s stupid. I hope that Harvard is fairly compensated in court and they use the funds to build a Barack Obama building on campus. You know, one of the people that actually got into Harvard.
Through affirmative action, as they admitted. Racist policies that are now illegal, Harvard still engaged in even after SCOTUS shut it down. Time to pay the piper.
Haha. Ok, racist maga boy, time to put on your little red little league hat and step away.
Nothing wrong with Little League where athletic kids can shine! Of course, nerdy brainiacs might not appreciate sports. |
Where can I get one of these million dollar professor salaries? ![]() The US government always has eminent domain right to any patents, and the power to tax wealthy people. Funding economic engines is not a bad thing. |
|
We don't want economic engines. They're too expensive. I really doubt how efficient or productive our society is. If we actually had economic engines, would we be in this mess? |

I guess we could do without economic engines and jobs and stuff and we can all just sit around the fire watching the smoke rise. |
Let’s take a glimpse into some at the presumably “valuable research” Harvard claims to produce; why not start at the top, with former Harvard President, Claudine Gay. President Gay ascended to her position based (presumably) on her academic and research bona fides, which consisted of a laughably-small number of published research papers: just eleven (11). Worse still, her “contribution” to peer-reviewed research consisted of published works on critical race theory, DEIA, systemic white oppression of BIPOCS, colonialism, etc. As if that fact were not damning enough, President Gay plagiarized much of her published work. And on this record, Harvard elevated her to the top leadership position? Seriously Harvard? Were it not for a Republican-led congressional investigation into antisemitism on campus, Ms. Gay would presumably still be the top leadership figure at Harvard. As things stand, Ms. Gay is still compensated at over $900,000 per year at Harvard as the Wilbur A. Cowett Professor of Government and of African and African-American Studies. The President was amply justified in putting pressure on Harvard in the wake of Harvard’s incalcitrant response to a reasonable request, pursuant to an investigation of antisemitism on Harvard’s campus by foreign students visa holders. |
We used to blow on our video games to get them to work. |
Every single college in the US needs to vocalize their support of Harvard. If we allow Trump to take Harvard down, they’re all going down. To be replaced by for-profit patriotic centers of learning.
The silence is deafening. |
