He needs 217 |
Or a bunch of republicans can not show up. |
He flipped 13 holdouts plus re-gained Spartz, who had been voting Present but never actually voted for a different candidate. This time she switched back to voting for McCarthy. |
| Interesting info on the holdouts https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/01/04/us/politics/house-speaker-republicans-vote-against-mccarthy.html |
| So what is his next move? Keep trying to flip another 3, or push for a plurality vote? |
I think C-Spans tally was wrong. There were 2 Rs absent (Buck and Hunt) and 1 D (Trone), so the total should have been 431 not 432, but with the absences the margin is 216 to win this round. |
| what happened during this morning's confab that made the holdouts switch to McCarthy ? |
Some on twitter are suggesting simply that it is Friday and people don't want to stay for the weekend. |
| Could Gaetz, Boebert, Biggs, et al, be on the receiving end of some revenge, in the form of lost committee assignments, no access to the gym, etc.? |
I'll bet this has more to do with it than anything. |
As long as that district is gerrymandered, the likes of Bob Good will win. Charlottesville went 90% for the opponent, Josh Throneburg, a minister. The election prior, Good was up against a brilliant doctor and lawyer from Charlottesville, Cameron Webb, who has some sort of role in the Obama White House (I'm guessing health policy). The district map got redrawn in 2021, but it still dilutes the blue parts of Central VA. |

| Any one know Andy Harris’s deal? Boebert, Gaetz and Jordan I understand- we’ll sort of. |
Good also beat normal R Denver Riggleman in the primary. Riggleman ended up on the staff of the J6 Committee. I remember Webb but I don’t remember hearing anything about Good’s opponent this time. |
Old but interesting article https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/01/13/this-is-actually-what-america-would-look-like-without-gerrymandering/ |
