Anyone have a friend like this? Everything upsets her so much in the world… her family, politics, this country, men, work, her contractors, and on and on. She’s worried she’ll be deported by ICE (even though she is American born, white Christian), she’s worried about texting anything political because someone might be reading her texts, she’s worried that she received a group email from a listserv discussing politics
How do you have patience for friends like these? She is a kind and good person overall |
| How is she needy? Is she constantly dumping this on you, or needing you to agree? What does she need from you specifically? |
Reaches out, worried about X Y Z. Needs soothing |
| What does being Christian have to do with her citizenship status? Most people being deported are Spanish-speaking Christians. |
| YES. I have a friend like this. Everything is always an emergency. I think it’s narcissism. |
Of course it is. She is worried about the world, about politics, her family, her country. What else could it be but narcissism?
|
We all are worried about the world, but it’s a certain personality who makes everything about them. |
You can’t really be this dense, can you? |
This. Everything is the end of the world. It’s usually fairly normal stuff that might be slightly annoying, but not OMG WHAT AM I GOING TO DO???!!! |
Well, she’s not worried about her family exactly. She doesn’t speak to them |
| Drop them like it's hot. |
+1 Not surprised she isn’t speaking to her family |
| When she starts on a rant, tell her to STOP and tell you something good going on in her day or life. Repeat. |
| She has severe anxiety. You don’t have to stay friends with her, but it amazes me that people on DCUM don’t seem to understand mental illness at all. |

She was probably born with a highly sensitive personality. As she grew up she developed significant anxiety, as is common with a personality type like that, and as a result she developed a lot of maladaptive coping mechanisms.
She would be helped by DBT therapy. |
