DD has these two schools at the top of her list. She's dreamed of UMich but after discussing with her friends and high stats classmates they're all pushing for Emory because it's higher ranked and way more prestigious. She goes to one of the Ws. I want to tell her to go ED for Michigan considering it was her #1 choice but the peer pressure is crazy. She is planning to go into biomedical engineering or chemical engineering with a backup plan to do premed. |
Have her visit both. And decide if she's more of a Northerner or Southerner. Both will be fine. |
Also...premed is not a backup plan because students now accumulate research, volunteering, and related jobs. All that would need to be done alongside engineering. |
Let her ED to UMich after visiting |
Which could be at the expense of valuable engineering internships in your desired field which is needed to land a good job upon graduation. |
Emory is not where I would go for chemical or biomedical engineering. |
Umich has a new ED program. If she has the stats for Emory, she'll be a shoo-in for UMich ED. However, for pre-med, Emory is MUCH better. I think Umich's premed acceptance rate is only 55%. |
damn these emory trolls are pathetic. No one on earth thinks emory is significantly more prestigious than Umich |
and Ross >>>>>> Emory. Umich >>> emory overall. |
Absolute garbage troll as emory doesn't even have engineering. You have to go to Georgia Tech |
A few points:
Don't let her idiot friends peer pressure her. They should not be the ones who tell her what to do. And I am not saying this because I disagree with them on this topic (though I do not thing one can argue Emory is "way more prestigious"). But just because it is a good mindset for this whole process. Emory does not have engineering. I am a big Emory fan. I am one of the people defending it on the other thread from all of the ignorant trolls who are bashing it for no apparent reason. But it is a plain fact that it does not have engineering. So if your child wants engineering, they should not go there. Visit both schools. They have very different feels. They actually do have quite a bit of overlap in applicants but that will be the best way to help figure it out. I would try to get there as early in fall semester as possible so you can make the ED decision. Excluding the engineering part, there isn't a "right answer" here. I can make a compelling argument for both schools. One is not dramatically better than the other. Except Michigan for engineering, since Emory doesn't have that. Or if your child was a football player. Which I'm guessing she's not. |
Emory is much better for premed. Premed and Engineering are very different so I dont see how OP could do both. |
Emory doesn’t have an engineering program. It’s a 3+2 or 2+2 with Georgia tech I think. And it’s not guaranteed and have to apply.
If the kid wants bme or ChemE apply to both gatech and umich. Out of state gatech acceptance rate this past cycle was less than 10% Good luck! |
Not even a question. No one should be paying OOS tuition for a public school. UM is a safety at our school. |
Obvious troll. Try harder. |
