All Star Relay Carnival

Think it will happen tomorrow? I remember last year same day it was almost rained out and here we go again.

Some events will happen. I'm not convinced all will, but they will certainly try hard to make it through.

This is my first time with a kid in ASR. What happens if thunder happens all afternoon/evening? Do they reschedule?

They will wait and wait 30 minutes at a time until they can't wait any more. They will also ignore distant rumbly thunder a bit.

I feel like it will be a non-event when we wake up in the AM and check the forecast. Over the weekend it was supposed to rain/thunder on Monday and last night was beautiful.

Last year they ran the meet while it thundered like crazy. Then as soon as they finished with 9-10 girls freestyle (or was it medley?) they canceled the rest of the meet. They have to finish a certain number of events in order to not re-run the meet.

Fingers crossed it’s all smoother this year!

It’s Rule 1n in the NVSL handbook. They have to get through 12 events in order to award trophies.

Whatever events are not swam receive the awards for where they were seeded, without the points.

Hopefully the storms hold off. I love relay carnival with all the fast swims!

It was the 9-10 girls medley! My DD was in that race and was the last one to get out of the pool before they called it. We actually heard the thunder during the prior two heats, but they let them swim anyway.

I think the race would have continued after the storm if it was possible, but I seem to remember there being an issue with lights. There was also no cell service, so there was no way to receive any updates. However, I’ve heard stories of past relays being delayed for ages before finally resuming. So be prepared!

It was 9-10 Girls Free Relay. They swam the Medley first. But they called the meet after the 9-10 Girls Free Relay because the lights were sufficient and there was no cell service to communicate with the children.

You’re right! It was the free relay! I forgot she swam that last year.

Anyway, good luck to everyone swimming tonight! I hope the swimmers can swim and Lincolnia Park/Tuckahoe can get their concessions sold!

The weather forecast is not looking good.

People already have to take most of the day off for this they may as well start it at 8am or do it on a Sunday.

You're a little late to be recommending that...

it's moot. nvsl most likely wouldn't have budged. Lots of other sports are also affected by afternoon storms. As these become more disruptive, folks will have to figure out whether to move things earlier in the season before July, new venues, or new event times. Rescheduling things to go deeper in July/August is not viable option for most of these activities. At least for summer swim, it's just an all-star relay problem but solvable if so desired. For other sports, it's a lot more complicated.
