Does anyone make really good fish tacos and can guide me? Where do I start? Which fish, any breading? Do I fry them? Do you make the crema homemade? And sliced cabbage. Am I missing anything? Thanks for your help. I really want to start making this regularly this summer. |
There are a ton of recipes that use different types of fish. Do you want to grill, cook on top,of the stove, or cook in the oven or do not care?
We used cod for awhile but my family did not like the texture (I bet breading would help) So we switched to salmon tacos. I personally like to cook in the oven for fish tacos - just add seasonings and bake. And then flake the fish onto a platter. The fish part is super easy. Here is a recipe: https://www.saltandlavender.com/healthy-baked-salmon-tacos/ For my family, the key is taking it time to make fresh tortillas. Which is easy but a bit time consuming. My son will eat anything if in fresh tortilla. I warn you, do not try this unless you are willing to keep it up. Topping - fresh pico, cabbage (I often buy Cole slaw mix), sliced avocado. |
Start with a fish you like and know you can cook well. We also love salmon tacos (either grilled or cooked in oven) but salmon is easy to cook poorly. We prefer non fried fish for tacos. Either grilled or seared are our favorites, salmon, tuna , halibut, and mahi mahi are our favorites. I agree with pp about the Cole slaw mix, so easy. We usually make an avocado crema and also have sliced avocados. We always have homemade pickled onions and jalapenos at our disposal and we will dice up some cilantro, tomatoes, onions, and have some lime wedges. I like radishes sometimes as well.
I agree with pp that homemade tortillas are the best. If you're using store bought, make sure to throw them in the oven, on the grill, or whatever for a few minutes. Not the microwave. |
We wanted fish tacos the other night but didn’t want to go through the mess of dredging/ breading/ frying the fish… so we used frozen breaded filets. It was delicious. Please don’t tell my friends. I’m supposed to be the fancy cook of the group. 🤫 |

You don't have to do everything in the video but if you want a step by step all included fish taco recipe, that one fits the bill. |
This is what I do most often. I lightly saute cabbage, then squeeze some lime juice over it. I chop up avocado and cilantro and serve that on the side. I have red and green salsas on hand. I hate sour cream, but if I have it in the refrigerator, I'll put that out for people who like it. That's about it! |
Fish taco sauce: one part mayo, one part sour cream. Add some lemon juice and chopped up capers. Mix in chili powder, cayenne, and cumin to taste. Delish! |
My favorite way is to prepare a beer batter, and pan fry in about an inch of oil. Either corn or flour tortillas can work, but they should be grilled first. |
