how to structure my exercise routine

Anonymous
Currently my fitness routine is walking 3x week, yoga/pilates 3x week. I would like to add a cardio class week. Would you drop a walk and a yoga class to add in the cardio, so each is 2x week. Or is there a better way to structure my fitness plan?

I like walking for sociability and because I can still do it if I’m away.

I love yoga and pilates and feel they help my balance and core.

I want to add the cardio to burn calories and lose some weight.

Thanks for any advice.

How old are you? I would add a strength class over cardio.

Agree. I would drop the yoga/pilates to 2x/week, add in strength (with weights, not bodyweight). And yes, add in cardio that you will actually do. I think it's important to do things that get your heart rate up, but if you think you're not going to do that and are more likely to just walk instead, then do that. Try to walk fast, or add in places with stairs and hills.

Losing weight is done through diet. You can't outrun a bad diet. Yoga, pilates and walking, don't get the heart rate up very high. I'd prioritize cardio over them. Yoga you can do before you go to bed. It keeps you strong but it's not real exercise.

This is OP. I was going to do you tube HIIT classes.

For those of you who recommend strength training, do you have any videos to recommend for a beginner?

I eat a very clean diet 90% of the time. I eat 2 meals a day and rarely eat snacks. I do weight training. I move a lot and do stretching. I'm 56 and weigh 109.

This will come form diet. Cardio is great and necessary for heart health but fat loss comes from diet.

Another way to get it all in and have time for yoga, cardio and strength training is to not think of fitting everything into a 7 day week. You can view your fitness block in terms of 10 days. So you can rotate it all in.

I also agree with adding in strength training. Personally I would aim to get in 7500 steps a day minimum, strength train 2-3 days a week, 2-3 days yoga and 2 days cardio. Again looking at it in a 10 day block instead of 7 makes it more doable

I would never want to weight 109 unless I were like 4ft 10"
