i've never seen rhee look so flummoxed

Wow. What did he do to her in that meeting?!?

Hmm, she didn't look flummoxed to me...just very uninterested in being there. And tired.

She looks like she's done.

I'm not a Rhee hater but that looked like an act to me. Look beaten down, like he was mean to her (which I don't believe is the case, he just isn't that kind of person) and then shortly announce that she's moving on. First to "spend time with her family" and then to be either Newark's chancellor or a State superintendent or something with the Obama administration.

My money's on the Administration, not Newark, because with the political job it's all grandiose ideas and tough position papers -- and no metric for success. If you say you succeeded, well, who are we to say you didn't!

With Newark, which is arguably MORE troubled than D.C. due to demographics and size, there's just too much likelihood of ... not being a rock star to the pale people. I don't believe there are any pale people to love ya back, in fact.

I thought this was very interesting clip. Gray is clearly letting her twist in the wind a little bit. She probably would like to be fired -- it's cleaner that way, there's someone to blame, and she can stump around the country as the icon of reform and why it is such a fight.

But, Gray is canny, I'll give him that (even though I didn't give him my vote). He knows if she quits, it looks bad on her. I don't think it's in his interest to move quickly against her; he runs the risk of looking anti-reform. I also thought there was a veiled threat when he mentioned that he has been on the DCPS oversight committee, like he was saying that he knows the real scoop on DCPS. And, it was very interesting the way he cut her off when she was directly asked about the elections, etc.

I think she's in a little bit of a bind. She clearly does not want to work for Gray. She does not want to work on a tight leash, and that's what Gray would have to do with her given her personal behavior during the campaign and why people voted for him. But, her rhetoric (I do what's best for children, not what's best for adults) makes her look a little foolish if she quits for something else. If Gray keeps her on, she will have a tough haul making test score improvements next year, as the wobble this year already indicated. One more year under Gray gives him more time to set up a situation where he fires her "for cause" essentially, either by using his position as Mayor to really comb her record and clearly outline failures or by putting her in a position to fail over the next year.

It's all very interesting and Shakespearan at this point. A chess game! Of course the kids always pay in the end, one way or another.

Agree. Please. A person like Gray is not capable of flummoxing Rhee. She is scanning the room for sketchy insane Rhee-haters. If the vitriol on this forum and elsewhere is any indication, her security could really be at risk in a small space like the entry way where she was first encountering the press. I feel sorry for her having to stand there placidly near his light weight ass. When she got outside and on the podium alone she was as composed as ever. She is becoming an iconic figure of female power (think Hilary Clinton) this is VERY threatening to a certain type of voter. She is in a very tough position right now...but, she looks like she can handle it...

10:22, Joann Armano? Is that you? Feelin' down? It's ok, she can go to Newark and screw things up there too!

DC is ready for a "reformer" that actually has some experience in the field of education. Grown-ups only need apply. (Yes, sulking in the corner after you lost is very, very immature Michelle.)

the reformers who came in with the "necessary experience" did not seem to do much in this city. let's assess rhee's term based on what was accomplished not on her background. she didn't do it nicely (which i agree will end up backfiring and force her out of the job), but she did start to do some of the tough work that needed to be done and done quickly in this city. i've worked with dcps and the administration of this system has been a disaster. someone needed to step in and just clean house to some extent. i applaud her for doing that. of course she continued some of janey's reforms (he was a good guy, just didn't move aggressively enough...we don't have 30 years to wait for results) to her credit. she took on the unions (and i support unions but they needed to partner in creating a way to evaluate teachers), she replaced principals who were not doing enough (including my local school). it is interesting what a lightening rod she has become in this city....good analogy to hillary. people hate or support her (not sure they love her the way people love hillary.)

OP here. If that was an act, she could give Meryl Streep a run for her money. If you don't agree with flummoxed, at the very least she looks uncomfortable, even caged. If she'd wanted out and told him, I think she'd look relieved. My guess is she wants to stay, because it would build her credibility as a committed reformer, and it hit her just how much control she's lost of the ship. I don't even know if any of that was articulated. This has become a perverse spectator sport. With a lot at stake.

Rhee's look is so predicatable... She ain't changed that scowl since she's been here...if she did smile more...I would think she's on a verge of a nervous breakdown. You're right, she was searching for a friendly face...and I was there when she saw certain councilmembers while exiting "thumbs up" were exchanged. If she really wanted to show a disengaged posture...she would have whipped out that blackberry and so be it. What idiot is saying that Gray is having her twisting in the wind...an election is still before us. If Rhee wanted to throw a monkey-wrench in it...she could resign and Fenty would had to appoint an interim and let the flood of speculations flow. She's not an elected official but a hired District employee...the federal sector is her oyster...also any state, city and county education has their sights on her too.

It's not the flummoxed look but the self-imposed gag-order that's probably acid-reflux irritating for Rhee.

Ok. No, paranoid crazy person, I am not whomever. Like I said she is not sulking, rather, scanning for loonies that might try to physically attack her. Look. at. the. picture. post-meeting. Not sulking. You sound like you're definitely the one who needs to grow up and learn to win gracefully.

If that is what you really believe, you are calling the wrong person paranoid and crazy.
