Should I...
1. join a pilates club? 2. join a gym and take zumba/dance classes? 3. try to walk the neighborhood each evening/morning? 4. join a women's tennis club? I need to exercise more, my kids are in middle school now and I work full-time in a high pressure/stressful job. |
if tennis lover 4 + 3
Else 2 + 3 |
3 and 4 is what I do. I play tennis just once a week, but also do the elliptical at home or walk. Add weights. I need to get more regular exercise too. |
Option 3 and option 5: weight/resistance training
4 too if you like tennis |
Do them all and more. Variety keeps you active and not burned out. |
Do whatever you think you would do regularly.
|
I would do 3 because I'm poor and that's free. |
1 and 3. Pilates for strength and walking for cardio. |
None of the above and all of the above. You should lift weights. No one prioritizes cardio anymore. It's not what the research shows is effective for health. Cardio is fun and I still do it and you should too to some degree. You should also be working on flexibility as you age but if you pick one thing make it heavy (for you) weights. |
This is the answer. Do whatever brings you joy. This isn’t something you can crowdsource. Obnoxious thread. |
I’m curious too. What is a good balance for health but also with keeping weight off ( with a sensible diet). I was a runner for years and very much enjoyed it. I’ve also done spin for 6+ years. However, now that I am 59 I want to exercise but no longer am motivated to run or do spin.
I walk about 6 miles a day as do 3 in morning and 3 in evening with my spouse and dog. It’s lovely but not a workout. I do weights at home about 3x a week but no more than 10-15 1bs. Is this enough exercise or should I be more aggressive. Would Pilates be a good workout but gentle? I guess I want activity but I no longer enjoy speed and intensity but I do want to stay in shape, muscle tone, and good health! |
If you are getting your heart up while walking and progressively lifting more, then that’s good. I’d add mobility/flexibility. |
Are you looking to exercise to reduce stress? If so, I’d prioritize cardio and community: 2 and 4. |
All of the above. |
Really all you need is a beach towel or (ideally) a mat.
Google HIIT exercises and pick 4 or 5 to try out. Get some music going, use your device for a timer or download one (I use flex timer) and work your way through some basic exercises. I have been in good shape all my life, but after introducing HIIT for last few years I look as good as I did in my 20s. |
