Sardines!

Anonymous
I ate these as a kid and hated them, so I didn't bother trying again until recently. Y'all I have been missing out! Sardines on toast is such an easy meal, as is a tin of sardines in tomato sauce over rice... There's all kinds of fun flavors now (preserved lemon, piri piri, olive and herbs...). Relatively cheap, low mercury, great protein. What's not to love about sardines?!

Please give me your favorite sardine-eating recipes, tips and tricks, and if you have a favorite brand or flavor, let me know!

Sorry I hate it.

I agree, sardines are a great food--fast and healthy. They also go well with Brussel spouts

I eat sardines straight out of the can for lunch everyday. It fills me up and keep my brain sharp for the afternoon. When everyone else is getting their 2 o’clock coffee/coke, I am chugging along.

Every month or so I do a 72 hour sardine challenge. Only sardines for 72 hours. This helps me keep my weight stable and revs up my metabolism. By the end I am ready to eat something else but this makes me feel amazing.

I love sardines. Getting them skinless and boneless was a game changer for me. I like smoked sardines dumped on a bed of lettuce with salad dressing. Sometimes I’ll add herb roasted potatoes to the mix. Sardines in mustard sauce or tomato sauce I’ll eat just as they are. Rodman’s and Trader Joe’s have been good sources for tinned sardines.

I love sardines. Maybe as a child you were given the ones packed in water, which are gross? The ones packed in olive oil (with or without additional lemons, mustard or whatever) are delicious.

Pair them with a quality cracker and dark ale beer. Unpasteurized and unfiltered beer obviously, none of that adjunct junk.

Sorry, didn't actually answer your question. We're Japanese and put them on top of soba (buckwheat) noodles. It's heavenly.

Love the too. So many whiny Americans with childish taste buds trained on a lifetime McDonald's, frozen floods, chlorinated chicken, and high fructose corn syrup bread. No wonder they don't like delicious foods in their natural state like sardines.

Don't need to do anything to it for me. Eat it straight outta the can like the Portuguese or Italians.

I like it with tomato sauce mixed with a little hot sauce over a salad, rice or on whole wheat matzoh.

DP. That sounds good. I'll bet some dried seaweed would complement it.

I'm Hawaiian and a favorite meal is poi with sardines, raw onion and a sprinkle of Hawaiian salt. 🌺🤙🏻
