| As summer swim season approaches, we noticed our pool has adopted MCSL guidance regarding gender identity. Basically, Swimmers can choose their gender regardless of what it was at birth but if you are nonbinary, you must choose one. There wasn’t any outreach or discussion about this that we’re aware of. Curious what have other pools done- for both policy/guidance as well as community outreach/feedback? Do you allow swimmers to choose their gender? What if the nonbinary individual doesn’t want to choose? |
| Most pools I’m aware of do this but on the down low. And have for many many years. |
| swimming has always been a gendered sport. Are you suggesting non-binary swimmers have their own 3rd gender category? |
| I think this has been the MCSL guidance for a few years. |
|
NVSL allows a swimmer to pick their gender at the beginning of each season, they have to keep with that gender for that season once selected.
|
AFAIK it has never come up. |
Obviously they have to pick. There are two sets of races, girls and boys. Is the kid going to race against themselves in their own heat? |
+1 Summer swim is awesome, but it's not necessary. If someone nonbinary doesn't want to choose, it would be impossible for them to participate. |
And follow the suit requirements for male and female suits, consistent with modesty rules. |
Wait what? Modesty rules? |
Modesty rule allows a swimmer to wear a single set of garments under the competition suit for modesty purposes. |
| In MCSL I've seen jammers worn over a tank suit. I assume it was legal and seemed to me like a good solution (and a way to match the team uniform if that is important to the swimmer, too). |
| Given the recent executive orders and college sports policy changes, have any pools changed their policies on this? |
No. It hardly ever comes up and these are neighborhood rec leagues. No performance scholarships on the line. By the time difference by sex really is stark (13+) serious swimmers are just there for fun. |
| Most kids who switch their gender aren’t good swimmers |
