My daughter is recovering from a pretty serious injury that took place in the fall/winter and likely will not be reselected to join her club team that she has been with for 2 years... I realize she is 9 and that I need to gain some perspective , but it is so difficult to see her want so badly to be able to rejoin her team in the fall and not be able to perform well right now during the try out season. I guess I am trying to remind myself to have some perspective here .. she can do rec etc. but she won't have that close nit team community feel which is what I guess I am upset about for her. It has been a tough 6 months of recovery and I should just be grateful for that part.
Kind of harsh for them to cut her. Sounds like its not the close-knit team community you thought you had.
Its U9, they sound like jerks frankly
OP, that's hard. But a few things: 1) are you sure they would bench her for being injured? What has her coach told you? 2) she's so young, there is a ton of time for her to make up lost ground, 3) this will happen to almost every player at some point. Coming back from an injury is rough but something that will ultimately strengthen her in the the end. She's too young to see this, obviously, but this is one of those "blessings of a skinned knee" moments.
OP here - yes I guess that is true , if they do cut her , even though she will be back to 100% by mid summer... you guys are right , that isn't as close knit as I imagined. That said the coach called prior to tryouts to encourage her to come .. but then also followed up that there are tons of kids trying out .. I guess it is a wait and see and let her feel sad if she does have to pivot for the fall.. TIA for the comradery !

Her confidence will take months to return, but it will come back! (My kid had patellar tendon strain, limited to no running for 5-6 months).
But, if your kid was good before the injury, they should save her a spot. Best of luck and don’t rush the comeback! Building confidence after injury takes time! |
2015 is actually U10 this year/U11 next year. That said, it's still young enough that if they cut her without letting her have a season to get back to form, that's really crappy. Our club would never do that.
I agree that this is a tad harsh. My 2015 son broke his arm and was out for a while and noone even mentioned dropping him from the team (top tier in his club). There were two other kids on the same team who were out for an extended period and also kept their spots.
OP here .. well they cut her , I am really having a tough time wrapping my brain around it but .. they took 5 new players and cut her off the roster. I realize she is behind due to her major injury this past 5 months but I still thought they would offer her a season to be on the roster that she has been on for a 3rd year and get back into things. I am trying to keep her spirits up but I do think it was pretty terrible.
Shes 9. When my kid was nine, they were great at every sport, made multiple travel teams for completely different sports. Now at 14 they are doing none of those sports and excelling at a completely different sport. They didn’t even like when they were nine.
Geez, did they at least try to keep her for the second team and assure you she could work her way back to the first team as she recovers?
This?! |
I had the same question. I have no issue with pushing her down from the first team, if that's what happened. Our daughter had a serious injury at around the same age and was placed on our club's third team (she couldn't play for the whole spring and couldn't do tryouts). We were fine with that and it was unquestionably for the best . . . it gave her the chance to recover and get back up to speed in an environment where it was easier to rebuild confidence and shine (because the competition, both internal and external, was less). She then played her way back up. I have a much bigger issue with dropping her entirely from any team. That's cruel at this age (especially because most teams have some filler on their lowest U9/U10/U11 teams) and reflects poorly on the club/coaches. |
They cut her so it's not the right team for her to be on anyway then. Our club never cut the player before of injuries and give player plenty of times to see they can make it back to pre-injury self before moving the player down or cut. That's really crappy of the club and better fr u to know that now.
Is this a small club with only one team per age?
