Teenager dresses

Anonymous
My teenage daughters have a few spring events to attend that will have a more conservative older crowd, like graduation parties with parents and grandparents, a confirmation party, etc. I don’t mind when they wear short Hollister dresses for events with just other teenagers but I’m looking for a few dresses that are still for teenage girls but not extremely short, cut low at the top, or with lots or skin showing. What brands would you recommend?

JCrew or Vineyard Vines

Nearly all female teens wear skimpy dresses to such events, OP. If grandparents are shocked, that's a generational clothing issue that has existed since the beginning of the 20th century: back then it was losing corsets.

If you want to encourage your daughter to wear something a little more tasteful, acquaint her with this maxim: only one limit tested at a time. She can wear something super short, but nothing revealing on top. She can wear a low-cut top, but nothing too short on the bottom. And so on and so forth. It's a dress rule that will stand her in good stead all her life.

It’s hardly unreasonable to expect a teen to dress appropriately for the occasion.

This is cute, my 40 year old self would wear this. So a teen would likely hate it?

Agreed, and if you’re going to a confirmation in a church it should be a little more conservative than a 14 year old’s birthday party

Some dresses are short or with cut outs but you can find appropriate dresses here.

I've seen teens at the Basilica in skimpy dresses for mass, PP. Your use of the word "appropriate" is exactly what's debated in this thread, so you can't use it as if we all had the same definition.

Reformation dresses-they have some cute midi ones that have slits so they don't look too conservative for teens but still appropriate for the events you listed.

I know two teens who bought it for their graduations. For ex, the white with cherries patterned one does not announce, “40 yr old mom” to me.

My 16 year old would love that. Your 40 year old self might want to lay off the cherry prints.
