Barking

I was reading the “racist dog” post and wondering - don’t all dogs bark at people?!?

My dog doesn’t seem to discern, but when anyone comes to the door she barks like crazy and sometimes jumps on them for about 15 minutes. Then she goes away and goes to sleep. She’s a very chill dog, always lying around. I cannot get her to stop barking. She’s 9 years old and a mini Goldendoodle so people don’t seem to mind or be afraid of her. Although a workman today did seem a little scared. She does seem to bark at some a little longer than others, and more men than women.

Are there dogs that actually don’t bark when someone comes to the door?? Or is that post talking about barking at random people on the street? Mine doesn’t do that.

Nope. You can train them not to if they do. It's like saying don't all dogs eat shit? Nope. Don't all dogs jump on people? Also nope.

Barks and jumps on people for 15 minutes? Doesn't sound so chill. The other post was probably talking about dogs you see when out and about like when a dog walker is out with dogs and when dogs see people wearing a cap or helmet - a few examples that were given.

You should not let your dog jump on people...that is really upsetting for a lot of people

My dog doesn't bark at people at all.
He's barking limited - at the door to backyard (to get in and out of the house) or when we come home and he's confined at one of the room. Pure community, nothing else. We have that dog since he was 7 weeks old, and we didn't do anything to suppress barking, he was born that way, I guess.
And I wouldn't call my dog chill at all, he's working line golden retriever, we spend a lot of time training him not to jump on people.

My dog doesn’t bark at people who come to our door. He gets up and comes to find us and accompany us to the door. If we don’t make a move to answer the door, he will bark at us as though he thinks we didn’t hear the doorbell.

My dog has been trained not to bark or jump... but he still does it for some of his favorite people, two of my best friends. Others, not at all. He responds to some primal energy in these two people (a middle aged man and a middle aged woman, not related), it's really interesting - I think it's because they encourage him, instead of ignoring him. There's nothing I can do when they pat him and coo at him while he barks his head off. He calms down after 5 minutes, but it's a long 5 minutes!

He used to bark when he was younger if he sensed people near the house, but not any more, unless it's a large male fox or dog.

Yeah, there is. You could teach your dog "quiet" and have your primal energy friends use that and a treat to curb this behavior so the dog doesn't bark his head off.

If you know your dog is likely to jump on guests, you should leash or crate your dog.

Thanks everyone! So I would love to be able to train her not to do this (okay so probably 15 minutes was an exaggeration - it’s probably 5 that feels like 15). She barks very loud when anyone comes to the door, sometimes jumps on them a little. Then she retreats once she’s used to them. But does it again when someone else comes or that same person comes on another day.

Other than that, she only barks slightly once to be let out or if she needs water. Never on walks or anything like that. I would love to train her just to come get us when someone is at the door! I like that she’s our doorbell, but I don’t like that she barks at people at the door.

If her recall is solid, this is easy to train. Have a helper knock/ring the doorbell, then call your dog to you. Treat when she gets to you, and walk back with her to the door, where she should sit, quietly, while you greet your "guest". Repeat until it sticks.

Don't open the door if she's barking, don't let her stay at the door barking; she needs to come to you.

According to that thread, only racist dogs bark.

NP. My tiny dog goes crazy when the doorbell rings. And she is an otherwise well trained dog. But people coming to the door makes her insane. We paid trainers to come every day to work with her on that and train her. They could not break her of the barking at the door.

FW to now, and I have to pick her up because she scares people. So now the doorbell rings and she runs to me to pick her up then barks. I know I'm doing it wrong, I just can't figure out how to get it to stop!

Oh I tried - these two friends LIKE his behavior and tell me: "No, it's fine, he's so cute". And they rile him up on purpose. I tried to tell them that they're not helping his training regarding my other guests, but it doesn't register at all. Thankfully my dog has more sense than they do, and doesn't bark at anyone else!
