My dog has been trained not to bark or jump... but he still does it for some of his favorite people, two of my best friends. Others, not at all. He responds to some primal energy in these two people (a middle aged man and a middle aged woman, not related), it's really interesting - I think it's because they encourage him, instead of ignoring him. There's nothing I can do when they pat him and coo at him while he barks his head off. He calms down after 5 minutes, but it's a long 5 minutes! He used to bark when he was younger if he sensed people near the house, but not any more, unless it's a large male fox or dog.
Yeah, there is. You could teach your dog "quiet" and have your primal energy friends use that and a treat to curb this behavior so the dog doesn't bark his head off.
Oh I tried - these two friends LIKE his behavior and tell me: "No, it's fine, he's so cute". And they rile him up on purpose. I tried to tell them that they're not helping his training regarding my other guests, but it doesn't register at all. Thankfully my dog has more sense than they do, and doesn't bark at anyone else! :-)
