What do you think of Lola for a girl?

Anonymous
I'm going back and forth between "it's sweet and adorable" like the cartoon Charlie & Lola, and humming "her name was Lola, she was a showgirl . . ." (which tells you how old I am!)

I know it's a derivative or nickname of Dolores, but I don't like Dolores.

I know I will get brutal honesty here. Fire away!

Showgirl... Sorry!

Fine for a baby.

Sounds strange for anybody older though - grade school, HS, working in a corporate office, etc.

I don't like it, sorry. The Lola song was about a transvestite, I think. But even without the song I don't like it, no offense.

Can't hear it without starting to hum L-O-L-A Lola, it's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world except for Lola, L-O-L-A Lola....

Makes me feel uncomfortable because of the other associations.

She would never be taken seriously.

Agree she wouldn't be taken seriously. I know several pets--birds and dogs--that have been named this.

Sorry, but I keep thinking that she will spend all of her time in "a club down in old Soho; Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola."

Unfortunately, between the Kinks and Barry Manilow, it's a tough name.

I agree, I can't see an adult professional named "Lola" being taken seriously.

I'm in agreement with the masses, it's not a good name for an adult.

I really like it - it has both a cuteness and a sophistication.

I also think it's ridiculous to making sweeping statements like "she won't be taken seriously". For real? There are a lot of awful names out there, and for the most part people's own behavior, speech and motivation determines whether or not they get taken seriously. And, by the time your Lola graduates from college, all the old farts who remember the Kinks and Barry Manilow will be in nursing homes.

Lola means grandmother in Filipino.
