MCPS covid cases

Sorry, but there's no blame game here. Anyone who sends their kids to school is contributing to viral spread equally through school lunches. Kids need school. They need to eat. What can you do, except restrict everything else apart from school, and then only close schools as a last resort?

And yet here we are on DCUM, urging the closing of schools as a first resort. Again.

I’d like to think it’s a wacko vocal minority, but who knows.

And it’s not just lunches where Covid could spread, masks are not 100%, particularly the ones most students wear.

Not this morning, it wasn't.

Not to mention this...

DCUM: We must do everything we can to stop covid, including going back to School On Zoom!
Also DCUM: The bus windows need to be closed or the kids will be cold.

Yep. Vaccinated people get covid pretty easily. And they are sick for a few days and go back to normal.
Unvaccinated people (of which there are plenty) clog up hospitals.

Do you have updated data to support your claim?

I live in Olney where we’ve had multiple new covid cases in the schools every day since early December. I know families affected (kids and adults). Everyone I know was vaccinated. Everyone. Some have mild cases, some have bad cases, and a select few are very, very sick (think: need monoclonal antibody infusion).

It’s bad and getting worse.

You are delusional if you think only the unvaxxed are getting sick. Everyone I know was vaxxed and our entire county is heavily vaxxed, yet the virus is spreading rapidly.

I am also in Olney and I wondered if the uptick in cases were unvaccinated people.

As posted earlier, Duke Hospital reported this week that 86% hospitalized with COVID are unvaccinated, 96% of COVID patients in ICU are unvaccinated, and 100% of patients on assisted breathing are unvaccinated.

The vaxxed aren't getting seriously sick.

There is a distinction between uptick in cases and sickness. Like with the multitude of examples in professional sports, the vast majority of healthy vaxxed people who are getting infected with Covid are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. Public health experts are saying vaxxed people can expect to become infected, but the vaccines will be able to keep you from getting seriously ill. This idea that we are going to stop people from getting Covid at all is unrealistic and not really helpful in trying to chart a course through the pandemic that allows people to live their lives while also not getting seriously ill.

Very true and you make a very excellent point. However, we are still operating on a number case basis and I don’t know enough to say it’s right or wrong but that’s just how it is. As far as vaccination status, everybody I know here in Olney/Brookeville has had their children vaccinated, teenagers vaccinated and everyone who is eligible for boosters, has received their shot. But I obviously don’t know everybody which is why I was wondering if the people getting sick were vaccinated. It’s unsettling that we went months without a single school notification and now they’re coming in two and three times a day.

Nope.

I know of tons of covid cases in 20832/20833, and everyone I know was vaccinated (with adults boosted).

It’s spreading rapidly.

Tell that to my sister in Olney who was vaccinated yet is struggling more than a week since testing positive. She needed monoclonal antibody infusion.

Candidly, I couldn’t care less what other community hospitals are reporting; I care about what MoCo hospitals are reporting. They are seeing a huge uptick. Given the majority of our community is vaxxed, they must be seeing vaxxed people.

Plus, the latest reports seem to indicate that your initial vaccination isn’t enough; you need a booster…and even then it’s not cool proof (as evidenced by the locals I know who were boosted and still got very sick).

I’m not anti-vax or booster. Rather, I think everyone should realize they aren’t bullet proof. You can get sick, so you should be extra careful.

I’m pretty sure people are able to assess their own risk for themselves without you telling them.

I’m wondering if your sister had a previous condition that leaves her more susceptible to Covid or other illnesses? The fact of the matter is that this new variant is 10 times less lethal the Delta. The schools close with the rising of Delta so they’re not going to close with Omicron.

This. This new variant spreads like wildfire. However it is much less severe than the original Covid or the Delta variant. People need to understand that we’re going to be living with Covid. It’s never going to be over.

You don’t know if it’s much less severe. It has existed on this earth for all of three weeks. There are some indications it may be less severe but we do not have enough data or cases to know that for sure.
