I can not believe republicans in Texas will re-elect these people. I guess owning the libs is more desirable vs having your kid come home from school and being lied to about why your elementary kid was killed. I just do not understand the value system of Texas.

It's conservative identity politics. Being loyal to The Team is more important than your kid's safety. It's insane.

Come on, people, get real. This is not about politics. I don't know WTH happened in Uvalde but this is not about politics. Grown ass men stood around harassing parents while their children were getting slaughtered by an 18 year old punk. This is bizarre as hell.

No it is political. The system is totally corrupt and everyone in Texas is rallying around the police and elected officials. This is about conservatism and rallying around people who lie. It does not matter is it is the “Big lie” or spreading lies about teachers, 911 operators, etc it a culture of lies that is the republicans/conservative way. It is about you and your fellow republicans and what you think is normal.

When dozens of young kids die to save the life of a cop, it's a clear sign of a decayed culture, not just in Texas but US.

Remember a lot of those kids were of mixed race. I bet that had a lot to do with the police hesitancy to risk anything.

From the many, many photos of the police standing with their guns looking tough, I think the force is pretty representative of the larger community.

What’s the point of having cops if these heavily trained, heavily armed, heavily protected cowards will not save the lives of little children?

I am glad video footage exist so Texans can see what the stupid propaganda and GOP policies get them.

The reality is we’re all afraid of someone with an AR-15. Asking small police forces to confront a shooter with a military weapon is not fair. They are to blame for the poor response but never should have had this responsibility to begin with. Those weapons should be banned.

I agree - but also why did that have that highly militarized (and presumably trained?) SWAT team?!

What an absolute tragedy, and I cannot believe that these people waited outside while the gunman slaughtered children. There is no amount of information or analysis that will ever let me get my mind around that.

They did not show up. The swat team came from CBP.

No I get that - I was responding to PP's statement that "Asking small police forces to confront a shooter with a military weapon is not fair. They are to blame for the poor response but never should have had this responsibility to begin with." Police forces the country over are militarized like this - but why, if it's not fair to ask them to respond to a situation like this? What if there were TWO shooters - like Columbine? Then they wait outside twice as long - despite having this sort of gear and training?

What is the point of a militarized police department if they still can't be tasked with responding to an active shooter. Am I a step away from defund the police?

people shouldn't even have military grade weapons.

+1 million. The USA is the only developed country that lets people buy automatic weapons as easily as they buy cigarettes.

The 18 year old did not act alone. Obviously.

??? Um, yes he did. That's the point: buying an assault rifle is INCREDIBLY EASY. Head over to Google and type "buy AR-15." See?

Only if his fairy godmother magically put $9,000. of cash under his pillow. Is that how you believe he got that kind of cash?

Extreme misrepresentation of facts like this doesn't help you win over anyone, only a swift dismissal from people who otherwise also want our country to be more safe from gun violence.

Yes, it’s so incredibly difficult and burdensome to buy an assault rifle. If you’re 18, it’s an instant background check and then out the door with arsenal in hand.

Assault rifles are cheap (sometimes less than 500 bucks, with tons available in the $600-$800 range) and very easily available for retail purchase. GOP!

This has been answered. He worked at Wendy's, saved his money and then took advantage of an easy financing direct purchase from the manufacturer.

Firearm manufacturers offer gun dealers all kinds of "financing" deals that they can extend to buyers. AR-15s on Layaway!

Are you naive? Buying an assault rifle is really, really easy. How can you not know this?

And ammo is even easier. Bullets cost about 50-60 cents each. Think about it: you could blow 19 kids' faces off for less than 10 bucks.

1. We actually have zero evidence that he was able to access “easy financing”. Why? He didn’t even have a credit card.

2. How exactly do you imagine he saved that much cash (after all the deductions) from a minimum wage part time after school job? Wasn’t he living in a shack with his destitute grandmother?

Idiot: you know nothing. Visit a gun store (or go online.)

It's waaaayyyyy easy to buy an assault rifle (for as little as $500 bucks) as long as there is not:

a) an outstanding warrant for your arrest
b) a restraining order in you currently in place (old ones are fine)
c) a record of you having been convicted of a felony

Assault rifles are very, very, very accessible, available, and easy to buy (and there are work-arounds for items b and c above.). That's America. GOP 4 Ever!

You're right. It was all a grand conspiracy and very, very complicated, mysterious and labyrinth... Buying an assault rifle is not INCREDIBLY EASY to do.
