Another gunman, another elementary school

I prefer to stay focused on the root causes. The fact that a single man armed with an AR-15 was able to inflict this level of atrocity is still the story--which was the same story in Buffalo and countless other mass casualty events.

The weapon used to kill these babies was an AR-15--a gun designed to quickly kill as many people as possible. It is the very definition of a weapon of mass destruction. At triple the speed of a handgun, these rifles literally spray bullets that are accurate over long distances, and cause devastating wounds to soft tissue and internal organs.

So, we can/should push for police training for these frequent nightmares, but until these weapons of mass destruction are pried from their "cold, dead hands", we will have more mass casualty events like these.

One point to bear in mind: Federal law prohibits a licensed gun dealer from selling a handgun to anyone under the age of 21. So an 18-21 year old opts yo purchase a semi-automatic rifle and large capacity magazine even though a handgun could be used to impose carnage in settings such as a school. A Glock 17 is issued to police and the military, can use a 17 to 33 round magazine, is more easily concealable, weighs less than 2 pounds and costs a fraction of an assault style rifle ($500 vs. $2000+). Of course an 18 year old can still buy handguns from a private seller in many states.

The only problem seems to be that police in Texas now have to sit around for an hour doing nothing while they try to figure out where to find the key.

If this happened at the school ted’s kids go to things would change.

The Texan police failed those kids. All the evidence of mass shooting says you have to take out the shooter immediately. You do NOT wait around for 1 hour, especially since gun fire had already broken out between police and the shooter right before he barricaded himself in the classroom.

The police can't even get their facts right. First the resource officer engaged with the shooter, then he didn't but other police did, and now they don't know the timeline that led up to the shooting. The police messed up big time and now trying to hide it.

How could the Texan police be so utterly incompetent?

My office building has an armed guard at the entrance.

Why doesn’t my kid’s school have an armed guard at the entrance?

The only upside is this and Buffalo should hopefully put an end to that “good guy with a gun” bull$hit.

It won’t. I keep seeing gun nuts post good guys nonsense on social media.

Because we want to get rid of the weaponry. Not spend our education dollars on guards and turning our schools into prisons.

The school had an armed guard/resource officer and it did not do any good. If anything, it could have aggravated the situation.

The image should be displayed as vehicle wraps and large signs that you hold on street corners. If the "crazies" can do it to advocate against abortion, so can concerned citizens.

Americans should eat, sleep, breathe their choices and lack of action.

I agree 100%, PP.

Actually, I’ve been saying this for months…I almost thought I wrote your post.

Show it all. Show the dead children in school. Show the dead senior citizens shopping for strawberries. Show the dead young woman at a music festival.

Show it all.

Make people uncomfortable. Make them face the consequences of their votes (or inaction).

It’s the only way people will be motivated to take action.

OMG really? Do you understand the $$ it takes to run a school? Who will pay for that?

Imagine the kind of schools and the kind of educated citizenry we could have if all the money we spend turning schools into fortresses was spent on education and creating opportunities and support? It is insane.

The basic safety of our school children is my priority. Why isn’t it yours?
