| Is the selection criteria at Blair magnet program purely based on merit? Or do they also do a lottery in addition to looking at test scores, academic performance, etc.? |
Technically, there is no lottery component. Realistically, there is going to be some randomness, since so many kids will look so similar on paper. |
That's not true. It's not random and mostly based on Map-M scores.
|
Map scores matter only to a certain extent. They have to make sure a kid can handle the work, but there are tons of kids with high scores who don't get in. |
This is something that gets repeated too many times, but at least in our circle, every kid that deserved to be there (about 20 or so) got selected. In fact I will make an argument in the opposite direction. For some kids at magnet, the work is too much for them. I believe 50 to 75 percent of the current seat capacity would be more appropriate. |
Honestly many kids not selected can benefit from being at Blair Magnet, since many teachers (magnet or non-magnet) at Blair are great and teach concepts well; the curriculum is great. Blair is an excellent school and diversity is a huge advantage. The music department is also fantastic. Kids would like it if they are motivated to learn and willing to take on challenges.

Because you are so qualified to be the judge of which kids "deserved to be there" and those that don't? You sound really horrible. I don't know any child who is unqualified to be in the magnet. I just know of a lot of other really brilliant and highly motivated kids who did not get in. |
| The arrogance of the some of the parents is probably the biggest downside of the magnet. |
No need to get defensive.Plus, improve the reading comprehension.I never said an unqualified child is in magnet. I in fact said the opposite. Every bright one that we know is there I said. And yet some portion of the kids there don't have a good experience because it is too much for them. This is not an opinion. It is a fact. |
Why would you ever need to interact with other magnet parents? I rarely, if ever, have occasion to interact with the parents of my HS kids’ classmates. I have no idea whether they’re arrogant or not. |
What are you even talking about? Dc knows of no one who finds it “too much.” How would you even know this? |
Maybe the kids who find it too much don't share their personal anxieties with your DC

Any idea what the highest MAP M score is this year? My kid said 291 is the highest score at her school, she is in magnet (Roberto Clemente), and applied for Poolsville SMAC.
I have seen in the past DCUM many students score above 300. Any parent here whose kid has more than 295 or 300, just for Curocity? |
True that. |
300+ in 8th grade is quite rare overall, especially in Fall, but common among Blair magnet admitted students by Winter/Spring of 8th. The median score is admitted students is in the 280s for Fall, and then add about 10 pts for school year growth. Clemente/Poolesville has list scores than TPMS/Blair. Clemente/TPMS since last year have lower scores than previous 8th graders because of the lottery. |
