I think it's around 245 to be ready to go beyond Alg. 1 to either Geometry or Alg 2 |
Do they consider fall MAP M score or Wniter MAP M score? |
That's "ready" as in "passing non-honors Alg 1 with a C grade for graduation", not "Ready" as in "highly enriched and continuing on an enriched and accelerated (faster, not just shipped ahead)" |

Do they consider fall MAP M score or Winter MAP M score? (Response) - I am not sure on that, and I don't think anyone can tell you with certainty whether fall or winter MAP is considered. |
Last year it was the Fall Map-M (taken 8th grade) that they considered. I did hear that they might take the Map-M score taken in 7th grade if it was higher than the one taken in the fall of the 8th grade. That was consistent with the information MCPS put out for selection criteria. Hope it helps.

Putting aside the fact that no one got 320, how on earth would you know that? Are you the math teacher? Or an administrator at the school? If not, you absolutely do not know this, |
Spring 7th grade and fall 8th. Whichever is higher |
How do you know this? Obviously I don't have access to the scores, but top scores are often talked about. I guess you don't realize how much kids talk about this. Teachers comment on top scores also, and not only math teachers either. It's different for more average kids where nobody cares whether someone scored 245 or 251. But this is more like sports. DC went to all state and kids from all over MD were taking about MAP scores, including very high scores they once heard someone getting. |

I have a Blair magnet sophomore who got in with a MAP score that was not 300 plus. In fact it was somewhere in the 270s.
Despite that “low” score he’s doing extremely well in the program which is a good fit for any kid who is strong academically but just as important also VERY organized and VERY motivated. kids in the program that aren’t doing as well as others are failing in staying on top of the volume of work, are not organized enough or just don’t care enough. The key to success in the magnet is not genius but the right combination of an ability to pick up subjects quickly, organization, motivation, drive, hard work and an ability to survive on too little sleep. Kids who aren’t strongly motivated to be part of this program will not be a good fit, so bear this in mind all you DCUM type A parents when you push your kids to a magnet. |
Kids lie. I’ve heard from more than one teacher that most kids are lying about their MAP scores. As a parent I have as much knowledge as you do about how much kids talk about this. Also I know that there is no 320 score because it’s not possible with the test. Look it up at NWEA. |
LOL |
Agree mostly; being able to learn and work with the like-minded peers is valuable.
|
It's true. Because the test has 45 question and fractional value, the rounding works out that you can get 319 or 321 but never 320. |
Does anyone in the magnet sleep?
Such a waste of an opportunity to rob them of the biological ability to form long term memories of what they learn. |
Another thing kids do is report a highest section score and let people think it's their overall score, or report the high end of the error range, so it's not technically a lie. And the very tippy top scoring kids are often shy or humble and don't participate in the boasting contests, so their scores are spoken in hushed tones of rumors, started by someone who stole a peek at a classmate's computer screen. |
