IB Math

DC is Algebra II HN in 9th grade. School wants him to take IB Math Applications I next year and the IB Math Analysis I as a junior and IB Math Analysis II as a senior. Am I missing something? I didn't think IB application was needed for IB analysis. He worked hard to accelerate. Is there anything else to do? The IB coordinator said if they did analysis as a sophomore they wouldn't have IB credit for the diploma for math.

Once again, we see how ridiculously stupid and bureaucratic the whole IB curriculum is. Especially for accelerated students.

I'm sorry OP... I'm not really sure what he can do here. Best is to probably educate himself with out of school enrichment to make up for what will likely be a lot of wasted time in school.

We are slated for an IB school. As I understand it, DS will take IB Math Analysis 1 and 2 in 10 nd 11th grade and then he can take Multivariate Calculus or Linear Algebra, both are offered at the school. The problem is more that the schools don't want the kids taking the IB tests in 11th grade and try to force the kids to take all the tests in 12th grade. I have been told that you can take it in 11th grade if you are not pursuing the IB diploma.

Personally, I am pushing for DS to student place to an AP HS and avoid IB.

Why can’t you take the test in 11th? And if your school does not want you to but you want to is there a way to bypass the school?

OP--our school will let him take the exam in 11th grade, but he would no longer be eligible for the diploma. It's an IB thing that you can only have 2 SL tests as juniors for the diploma and the remaining 4 have to be as a senior. Why, I don't know.

I think that it is because the program is meant to mimic European school progress and testing and the Europeans take their A levels in their 11th year, the equivalent of our senior year. It seems to only matter if the student is going for the IB diploma, which I doubt my kid would do if he chooses to attend his base school.

Analysis is the higher level math class. Usually students decide between taking either applications or analysis. If want the absolute strongest set of classes, take HL analysis in 10 and 11 and then as others have said, multi-var calc or other DE/college math in 12. If starts analysis in 11 will then be on track with kids that were a year behind in math class, which is fine but so not surprised. What is also true is if want IB diploma, the test is 12th grade (if exceptions haven’t heard this but some posters above sound like they have) so the kids that finish analysis in 11 will wait a year before take the test. When was the last time you looked at your high school diploma? Recommend skip diploma focus and just take the classes interest the kid.

Also, don’t get what IB coordinator telling your kid. Maybe ask it this way to them - if Larlo had taken Alg II in 10th, what would they have him take 11 and 12. Pretty sure they’ll say Analysis or Application and not both-so question is if other kids don’t take all 3 classes, why telling more accelerated kid to— I’m guessing it is to have him taking the IB math the year he’d test.

My take is the IB schools don’t really know what to do with the accelerated math kids that have taken Geometry and Algebra II before getting to high school-think another big reason parents push for AP schools.

If you want the IB Diploma, you have to play by IB's rules. Their rule is you must take the HL exams senior year for them to count towards the diploma.

The work arounds are to:
1) take Analysis in 10th/11th and test the end of 12th (requires diligence and self studying, but not impossible)
2) take a gap year before starting year 2. Take AP Stats online or at another school if your school doesn't offer it, or calculus after analysis year 1.
3) Not worry about the IB credit/diploma and just take the courses you want without the testing nonsense. You'll get credit for multivar since it will be DE.

I think what kids have done at our school is take

10th - IB Analysis 1
11th - Some sort of AP Math Class
12th - IB Analysis 2

So, they have a break between the two classes.

How hard is it to pick back up in 12th? Does it require outside studying?

Know too that colleges only see rigor of classes. Because test in 12, your kid will already have gone through college admission process (assuming they plan to go college route) BEFORE sit for exam and BEFORE would know if get IB diploma. During graduation the school says something like here are the IB diploma candidates, but don’t know until summer AFTER graduate HS if pass and actuall GET that diploma so kid should decide if worth it. Some collleges give credit if take tests and get certain score and some on this forum have said the tests are least hard part of getting diploma so students take more often than don’t if sent through rest of program.

My kid is not interested in the IB Diploma so we have no intention of playing by IB rules if he attends that HS. The ideal is for him to transfer to an AP school but if that is not allowed then we will happily take the test as a Junior when the material is fresh.

Kids from AP schools are accepted at European schools without any real fuss, the schools seem to be able to interpret grades and AP scores reasonably easy. the IB Diploma has nothing to do with acceptance at colleges in the US, it isn't conferred until well after graduation. The IB program should be a magnate school offering for kids who are interested in completing it instead of forced on kids at select schools who have no other options.

“We will happily take the test as a Junior” may not be an option. Have hear many ask and fight to do that and be turned down- told only available as senior, period. What school are you looking at that think they will let student elect to take in 11th?

There are people who take it as Juniors. The test is offered to the Seniors for that year, there is no reason why a Junior cannot take it. We know people who have done this.
