DC is Algebra II HN in 9th grade. School wants him to take IB Math Applications I next year and the IB Math Analysis I as a junior and IB Math Analysis II as a senior. Am I missing something? I didn't think IB application was needed for IB analysis. He worked hard to accelerate. Is there anything else to do? The IB coordinator said if they did analysis as a sophomore they wouldn't have IB credit for the diploma for math.
Analysis is the higher level math class. Usually students decide between taking either applications or analysis. If want the absolute strongest set of classes, take HL analysis in 10 and 11 and then as others have said, multi-var calc or other DE/college math in 12. If starts analysis in 11 will then be on track with kids that were a year behind in math class, which is fine but so not surprised. What is also true is if want IB diploma, the test is 12th grade (if exceptions haven’t heard this but some posters above sound like they have) so the kids that finish analysis in 11 will wait a year before take the test. When was the last time you looked at your high school diploma? Recommend skip diploma focus and just take the classes interest the kid. Also, don’t get what IB coordinator telling your kid. Maybe ask it this way to them - if Larlo had taken Alg II in 10th, what would they have him take 11 and 12. Pretty sure they’ll say Analysis or Application and not both-so question is if other kids don’t take all 3 classes, why telling more accelerated kid to— I’m guessing it is to have him taking the IB math the year he’d test. My take is the IB schools don’t really know what to do with the accelerated math kids that have taken Geometry and Algebra II before getting to high school-think another big reason parents push for AP schools.
