When do you get the HOPE score?

Do we ever get the HOPE score if we parent referred?
Anonymous
You have to ask for the packet, which they typically will not give you until either it's been sent off to the central office or possibly after the central selection committee meets.

I never asked for packets for any of my 3 kids, but to read this forum everyone does it.

Note they give your kid a HOPE (before recently GBRS) each year. In years when your kid isn't referred to full time AAP it typically is done in spring. It's in your kid's file.

They do but they are not included in the AAP packet, it is information that the school uses to help balance classrooms for the next school year.

I asked for my child's packet because I was interested in how the Teachers really saw my kid. The report cards and assessments that we get are so generic you don't get a real feel for how your child is progressing. The AAP packet gave me a much better idea about what the teachers saw in my son and his strengths and weaknesses. He had strogn GBRSs and the area he was weakest in, writing, was no real surprised. I have other friends who asked for their kids packets and boy were they upset with how the teachers saw their kid. There was some impressive complaints about the comments. Their kids were not placed in AAP and we still hear the comments today.

Got it. Thank you! Seems like a lot of power in the hands of the second grade teacher!

My child's HOPE was signed by a committee composed of the principal, all second grade teachers, librarian and art teacher. I am sure his home room teacher has the most input but there might be other inputs.

Yes, but they hate you knowing that because they very understandably don't want to be pestered about it. DD3's 2nd grade teacher made sure to make a big deal out of the fact that she was not the one deciding whether or not your kid got into AAP, conveniently leaving out the fact that she was a key player in writing the HOPE.

So don't be that parent and bother the teacer.

Also at our school the AART and 1st grade teacher have input on the 2nd grade HOPE.

To answer your direct questions, you only get the HOPE score and other materials that are sent to the central committee if you request them after they are sent. This is important to know in the event your child is not accepted and you wish to appeal because the appeal window is short. For example, there is less value to paying for a WISC if it's clear that the HOPE is what caused the student not to be admitted to full time AAP. If it's the work samples that were weak, you can submit new, better ones. But if it's the HOPE score, you may as well wait until year because it's very subjective and the same individuals are unlikely to render a different result.

I say this as the parent of an accepted kid with what I now know to have been an excellent HOPE score. At the time, I wasn't confident about that because there were aspects of my kid that weren't reflected (not all ratings were "always," and teacher didn't know about musical and language abilities because they take place outside of school). Bottom line, you are dependent on how well they know your child and how they "view" DC. If you have young children, it's worth requesting the packet regardless.

Concur with other posters that you'll have to request it. We found my DD's mirrored exactly what her teacher discussed with us at our fall conference, despite our clarifying several of the teacher's misconceptions from that assessment. I believe the HOPE gets signed off at the local school level, but with so many kids I highly doubt anyone but the 2nd grade teacher really had input.

Of note, below is what a 2020 report found about HOPE (formerly called GBRS) scores. I would guess this is why the changed the name, but I don't see what else is meaningfully different.

"Reconsideration of use of the GBRS. There is currently very little, if any, evidence that the GBRS is a valid and reliable assessment tool for identifying advanced learners. It is currently a major factor in AAP service eligibility, despite very limited psychometric foundations."

The GBRS was very different. It included commentary and matched more closely with standard answers you'd get if you google "signs of giftedness."

You can still look at it: https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/AAPGiftedBehaviorRatingScale_0.pdf

This is OP. Good point, I would never do that. More breathing a sigh of relief that her first grade teacher is gone because she really was not a fan of my kid.

Last year I requested the file in late Feb from the aart. Fwiw my kid had an excellent HOPE score but was not admitted on the first round as my kid blew the Cogat (specifically the "verbal" section). We did a WISC which was much more consistent with their abilities and got in on appeal.

Does anyone when they actually submit the HOPE score to central committee?

I believe we find out in the spring if our child got in so I assume the schools submit these packets sometime in February?

Last year our AART submitted the packets to central on February 15. She sent me my child’s packet the following week when I asked.
