3 kids, 9th grade (could repeat grade if were to switch schools as very young for grade), 6th and 4th grade.
I may be offered a job in nyc. I make $350k in dc right now. How much more would justify a move with a family from dc? Dh can work remotely $150k salary |
Do you want to live in NYC? That seems like a bigger question than the kids' adaptability - they would be fine. It would take a million dollars to get me to move to NYC though, and even then....
I wouldn't uproot my kids in this scenario. You make $500K combined, how could you possibly need more money?
No, you will be poor AF
At least double what you make, but if you're all happy where you are, why? Is 500k HHI really not enough?
+1 OP our HHI is similar to yours and our life is very comfortable here. I think it would take $1M+ HHI to have something comparable up there. I would only make the move if you actually want to live in NYC and have that experience. |
At least double your current income, with the understanding that your home will be half the size of your current home but more expensive.
Double your income if you want same QOL as you have in DC. And even then you’re still looking at a cramped 3BR apartment for a huge amount of money.
I took a job in NY but work remotely. They didn’t need to pay me the 2x locality bump and I can get there in time hours whenever needed. I seriously don’t know how NY firms are going to staff senior talent locally. I make a salary that is rich in DC but can’t cover basic shelter and food in NY.

There is a thread where the OP has a choice to move to Austin, Seattle or NYC for her job. I think combined they make 700K.
I would search for that thread and read it. A lot of good info on the challenges of living in NYC with kids. We live in NYC without kids and love it, but I know kids can bring challenges in terms of costs. |
Absolutely!
Double? 700K?
What’s the job type? Is it like banking and need to be in 5 days or can you go in 3 days? Where in nyc do you have to work?
You would have to live in the suburbs with a good public school system and commute into the city on the train. is that ok with you?
You really wouldn’t need $1 million for a comparable QOL but you might need it to justify uprooting your kids at fairly tricky ages to do so.
