693 FCPS Students Named National Merit Commended Scholars in 2024

Anonymous
10% increase from 2023 from FCPS.

TJ had 156 of the 693 (22.5%) in 2024. TJ has about 500 seniors (est).
TJ had 181 of the 628 (28.8%) in 2023. TJ had 439 seniors.

TJ's 2023 number is all the more remarkable because they had 60 fewer seniors than they have this year.

Looks like pretty big increases in Langley and McLean.

Didn't they have that many NMSF in 2023?

Is a 6% drop in commended scholars interesting? At all?

Well, we cannot measure in-nate intelligence with objective tests like NMSQT.

Having said that

In
2023: 95/441 students were neither SF (165), nor commended (181), which is 22% of the class
2024: 266/503 students are neither SF (81), nor commended (156), which is 53% of the class

Great. Release the data for second place honor so the whiners won't whine.

53% of TJ seniors didn’t make commended or SF?! That is shocking. I knew the admission changes led to a decline in student quality up I didn’t know if was that much.

The class of 2025 only has 503 students left? I thought they started with 550 and then admitted some kids at the start of 10th grade to compensate for some of the attrition. Does this mean that nearly 80 kids (assuming around 30 froshmores were added) out of the 550 dropped out?

It's especially shocking because the number of seats going to LCPS, PWC, etc. was increased substantially in the new process, meaning that TJ and FCPS are in theory poaching a much larger number of high performers from the surrounding counties.

It's amazing to me just how many kids who were so gifted in 2nd grade that they needed to be isolated from the general population and placed in a self contained gifted program aren't even at the 97th percentile as 11th graders.

There have always been these YoY fluctuations. I wouldn't get all worked up over it.

Frankly I'm surprised the numbers are even this good.

This is why quotas don't work.

Wow. That’s a huge decline and about as strong evidence as we’ve seen about the declining quality of TJ students. This is simply not an elite school any longer.

If most TJ students can’t even earn Commended Student status it’s time to make them play a real football schedule again.
