My doctor said I can arrive to the hospital and decide. I went into labor early and naturally with both. I honestly hated them both. With the first it was back labor and baby ended up being breech presentation but wasn’t caught until last minute. That’s why I had an emergency c section. Second birth was pretty fast. I had the epidural but could still feel pain but overall I was okay. I’m not sure what would make me want to do a C-section again … any thoughts? If baby ends up being huge I could see that… maybe if I’m already in a lot of pain when I reach the hospital? Another reconvene I have is not getting enough pain meds. With my prior c section it was 9 years ago and I really needed the pain meds. Now they don’t give them as much.. I had to go to the ER to get more pain meds a week or two after the C-section. It’s sad we have to think like this! I feel like when men needs pain meds it’s no big deal but god forbid a women need some after having a baby. My husband had his appendix removed and saved them for me just in case I need them postpartum.

I was given plenty of pain meds for my scheduled C, so I don't know what you're talking about... |
Both of my scheduled C sections I had 4 nights in the hospital with around the clock oxycodone and Motrin (if I asked for it) and was sent home with 30 oxycodone pills. It was more than enough! And my kids are 5 and 7. That being said, continuing to need narcotics 2 weeks after your c section sounds unusual. |
You sound like a drug addict. |
I was told directly from nurses at the hospital tour they only give Tylenol unless you really really need something stronger and when going home you may only get a few stronger pain meds.. this is OP. |
But that was 5 years ago… I’ve been told by other moms it’s not the norm anymore. |
I had three C-sections and was up and moving around in well under 24 hours for each. I really only used the pain meds for breast-feeding. For me, the only issue with C-sections is that it’s a little hard to get in and out of bed for the first week, and the scar itches like crazy at about four weeks. |
I haven’t had pain meds since my c section 9 years ago. I’m hesitant about it for several reasons. 9 years ago I don’t remember how many I received and I may have just taken them too fast. I can’t remember the details but when I reached out for more less than a week later the midwife on call was very rude and said I don’t need anymore. A few days later I went to ER as I was having back pain and couldn’t get out of bed or lay down straight. I slept in the sofa for at least a month. If I were a drug addicted I would have went looking for pain meds in between the time I last took prescription pain meds I.e. 9 years ago. I am worried about recovering. I am older now and we have stairs in our house and I have other kids to look after. |
Op here. This is my biggest concern. We did buy an adjustable bed and placed it on the main floor in case I can’t climb the stairs. I also have hyper mobility and it makes it harder for my body to recover from joint pain postpartum. It takes longer for my joints to strengthen and for the relaxin hormones that relax the joints to go away. Right now I struggle to get in and out of bed due to hip pain. It really sucks but so far I have only gotten stuck and been immobile a few times. It’s sucks the most when I need to use the bathroom. I wear adult diapers at night just in case I get stuck. |
Op here. I also tried to breastfeed the first time. This time I’m not going to bf so that sounds like it would be easier on recovering. I was also in my 20s and wasn’t prepared for having a c section. I didn’t know about belly binders… probably wasn’t getting in and out of bed slowly. It was an emergency c section. |
Sounds more like she has anxiety about bringing up pain meds because she doesn’t want to be seen as drug seeking. It’s pretty obvious and she has a valid reason. These days you can’t ask for what you need without being called drug seeking so lots of people don’t ask. Why would someone go through 9 months of pregnancy just to get pain meds for a week? Makes no sense.

That was my experience with a vaginal birth, but are you sure that’s the policy with c-sections? If so, that’s nuts…but unfortunately, believable. I herniated a disc in my back and was incapacitated and my PCP was on vacation, so I had to see a doctor who didn’t know me at all. I was in agony and she prescribed 5 pain pills. |
Maybe I should double check. I stayed 1 week after my second pregnancy and that was vaginal. My recovery doesn’t seem to be the norm since I have really bad hip pain. I almost dropped the baby in the hospital because my legs gave in. Since sitting makes the hip pain worse I stand most of the day. I was still shaky after delivery and dh couldn’t stay the night. I couldn’t sleep at all so eventually I asked for a stronger pain med. The doctor resisted at first and suggested that I do physical therapy while I was in the hospital! I insisted I need something stronger while I am in the hospital. Dh also brought the big pregnancy pillow and that helped a lot. I do recall I had to use a wheelchair to get to the NICU. I have no way of knowing which doctors I will have as I am at a big practice. I do feel awkward bringing up pain meds with my doctor now. Postpartum at the hospital the doctor who was checking on me was with another practice. I didn’t have any sort of relationship with him at all and he kept telling me all I need is Tylenol. I told him since he’s a man and hasn’t given birth or had hip pain he doesn’t know what I need. He argued with me for awhile but eventually said I could have a stronger pain med so I could sleep. |
Which hospital are you going to? I had 2 C-sections, one 4 years ago and one 2 years ago at 2 different DC hospitals. In both cases I got a prescription for 30 days oxy (or 30 tablets? Idk) that I never took. They put me on Motrin and Tylenol combined at the hospital and that was plenty, until I made a stupid mistake postpartum and overdid it with holding my first child postpartum. That causes the scar intensely for days.
Several things : 1) get the belly binder 2) there's a proper way to get out of bed, kind of going sideways than pushing straight up. 3) going the stairs down backwards helps 4) really don't lift. Teach your older children how to get into the car seat, the booster chair, etc ahead of time. The second 2section was way better than the first since I knew what I got myself into, even though it was a failed vbac. I'm not sure what to recommend to you, I'm not sure if really matters that much. Both have advantages and disadvantages and it's just not clear beforehand what's better. |
Op here. I’m no longer living in dc area. I am in Philadelphia now but an hour into the suburbs. My other two births were in different states as well. If I can swing it I would definitely prefer not to take strong pain meds as they can cause constipation and I am dealing with that now. Perhaps it depends on the region you live in and what their opioid crisis looks like. I’m pretty sure I asked specifically about c sections during my hospital tour recently. If I end up with a c section it sounds like as long as I advocate for myself I’ll have enough for at least a week. It’s been so long since the first c section and I can’t remember if I was also taking Tylenol or ibuprofen. I didn’t have friends who had c sections and definitely went into it blind. |
