But playing 5-6 u16s and giving them lots of minutes shows a lack of depth at u19. This is true even if you have a couple D1 commits. |
This is just not true, not sure where you got your info from. The coaches for Prime were two of the senior Jackals coaches and have tournament experience. One is a BCC coach. The Prime founder originally founded the Jackals and MCC lacrosse. Some would say they have more experienced than the current Jackals and other new teams. Again not sure where you got your info from, always good to fact check everything you read on here. |
Here’s the bottom line folks. The DMV is too congested and with a lack of field space, proper field surface, and good coaching to ever compete with the likes of PA, NJ, heck even NC. These locales have college coaches coaching club field hockey. They have water turf fields. They have ease of transport - adequate parking, no traffic, etc. We have crappy uneven high school grass fields, middle school coaches, terrible traffic… It’s not a fair fight. |
When you say top D3, who we talking about? My understanding of D3, and I'm admittedly not an expert, is that there is a big drop off after the top 5-6 programs. We live in Virginia so my daughter doesn't play on a team in that region; but I think it is great that an "underdog" club could win. Congrats to them. |
Anyone know when nexus championship selections get announced |

What is going on w USAFH Nexus. It seems the program gets more and more dysfunctional every year!! |
There seems to be changes every year, but I'm not sure I would call it dysfunctional. Its a huge money grab and I'm not sure what the average member gets out of it. |
It’s a massive money grab that unfortunately has become a de facto filter for D1 recruiting. The fact that it even exists for U14 highlights this feature. There are weird behind-the-scenes things that go on & definitely quotas for certain clubs/regions that are good or bad depending on where you sit. |
^^^ truth |
Sadly true. My DC went to Nexus Championship too (so I'm not sour grapes). But, Nexus is SOOOOOO political and it is a screener for D1 (along with the foolish Max Field Hockey invitational). So by virtue of that if you can't or don't want to do NEXUS, you're screwed for D1 if that's your goal (unless you have another coach connection). Plus, NEXUS simply passes on the same players every year whether they deserve to be there or not. |
Are you kidding? This is completely inaccurate. Yes, Midd, Hopkins, and a couple others are the perennial favorites. But there are lots of AMAZING D3 programs and those schools are always in the mix (i.e. Bates, Ursinus, F&M, Tufts, CNU, Lynchburg, Rowan, Salisbury, and others). And there are some great ones on the rise (i.e., Bryn Mawr is doing great things). And NL has some players committed to these D3 schools. |
It can be fairly predetermined. Like if you've made the Nexus Championship before, you have a pretty good chance of making it again regardless of age group because you are a known commodity. If you've advanced to the USWNT Selection Camp and/or USWNT team, you are an absolute lock to make Nexus Championship again. They also have club coaches working at Nexus who advocate for their players. But despite all of this, it is still a good gauge of talent from a skills standpoint. The girls that make the Nexus Championship are good at field hockey, period. They don't select girls that suck. |
No, no one sucks. But is some real talent left behind? Absolutely. They are looking for a very specific kind of player, which is fine if this were only about national team scouting. But as noted above, it’s become something more than that, and so everyone throws their money at USAFH. |
