What time does your 7th/8th grader go to bed? What time do parents go to bed?
My kids tell me that their friends go to bed around 10:30/11 on school nights. But mins go to bed around 8:30-9. We go to bed by 10. Are we the only ones? |
| Nope. Mine are 9-9:30. |
| Mine starts getting ready at 9:30. Gets in bed at 10/10:30. |

I try to make sure my 8th grader is in bed by 10pm. Some days she's tired and goes to bed much earlier. Twice a week she doesn't get home from sports practice til 8:30, and by the time she has a snack and does homework it's sometimes more like 10:30. She gets up at 7.
She definitely has friends who are up later based on when she gets texts though. |

Talk to kids this age about health, sleep needs and the impact on the brain and growth during puberty, and sleep hygiene. Don't talk as much about "rules" or what other people do, but help them learn and understand what is best for their bodies and brains.
Bed time will vary based on when a family needs to wake up, whether a kid is an athlete and so needs more recovery time, illnesses, health in general, conditions like ADHD, mood disorders, etc. https://aasm.org/sleep-changes-predict-the-onset-of-physical-changes-associated-with-puberty/ https://www.nationwidechildrens.org/specialties/sleep-disorder-center/sleep-in-adolescents |

8 or 8:30. 9 at the latest. They get up at 6.
I try to go to bed by 10, but it's usually closer to 11. Anything later and I have space brain the next day. I get up at 5:30. |
| 7th grader: 9:30pm bedtime, screens of any sort off @ 8:30pm. Rises at 7:00am for school. I go to sleep around 10:30pm. |
| 7th grade has to go to bed by 9, but its more like 9:30 due to school homework and study for exams. Adults go to bed between 10:30-11:30. |
| We’re about the same. 9 pm for 7th grader, 9:30-10 for us. |

12yo 7th grader.
Most nights in bed by 830 and phone goes in my room to charge. She reads or draws or just futzs around then light out at 930. Routine is the same on the weekend unless we’re out for a special occasion. I got to bed around the sane time she does if it’s a work day and work the next day. ( I work 12s) If I’m off the next day I go to bed around 10. |
| My 8ty grader is to be in bed by 10:30. He doesn’t have to get up until 7/7:15, because we live very close to his school. I go to bed between 9:30-12, depending what’s going on. DH usually stays up until 12 or so. |
This is when we all start the bedtime process. I think he stays up later than us, reading. |
| 9-930, one gets up at 530, the other at 630 for a 650 bus. |
| Unless there's a late sports practice etc, it's 8pm in room, she's usually lights out by 8:45-9. Alarm at 6:40. Parents to sleep at 9:30-9:45, alarms at 5am. |
| My 8th grader gets home from practice about 9 twice per week and then it’s a snack, shower and bed. She’s sleeping by 10 those nights most of the time. The other week days it’s more like 9:30-9:45. I try to go to bed by 11. We have older kids who have later things going on, so that’s a factor too. Your sleep changes when your older kids are out driving to their later practices and jobs, at least mine did. |
