Bedtime for middle schoolers and parents

Anonymous
830-930. 930 is lights out. I'd say 4/5 days he's in bed by 830 and asleep by 9. Up at 6. On weekends his bedtime is 1030. Sometimes on Saturday he will stay up that late, but most weekends he's usually asleep by 930.

DH and I are in bed around 930-10.

We start the process by around 9:30 but often it’s 10:30 before lights out.

Supposed to start the process around 8:45 and be asleep by around 9:30. Takes forever to get ready for bed. I definitely have to be involved to make sure lights are out by 10.

Up at 6:30.

In bed by 9:30 but one reads or does whatever and takes awhile to fall asleep. The other is asleep when his head hits the pillow. Slow to fall asleep is up by 7:00 on her own. Fast to fall asleep is up by 8:30 with an alarm.

Same for my 13 yo. I also have a 15 yo that is usually up doing homework until 11 and then wants to chit chat for 10-15 min before bed. So I stay up for this teen tuck-in of sorts and don’t get to be myself until 11:30.

I would love if they went to bed earlier, but it won’t happen. I’ve made my peace with it

I try to go to bed by 10, but it's usually closer to 11. Anything later and I have space brain the next day. I get up at 5:30.

Same here, and I hear from my kid that "everybody" has later bedtimes. I know from talking to parents that it's not true.

Given how early DD has to get up, 8:30 is the target and 9:00 is a special occasion.

My 7th grader probably goes to bed around 10:30 - sometimes a little later. I don’t monitor her or my son’s (10th grade) bedtime anymore. They both get up on their own and handle themselves in the morning and do not miss the bus. As long as they can do that I am okay with them managing their own bedtimes. I am usually lights out at 11:00.

My 5th and 7th graders go to bed by 8:30 or 9. I go to bed by 10-10:30, anything later than that and I can’t fall asleep anymore.

This was us. In HS, we stepped up to bedtime being "their grade" but they were usually in bed before those times.

~ in RVA where MS (Gr 6-8) bell is 8:35a-3:15p, HS bell is 9a-3:55p (but both DC did/do Early Bird/EC activities and are at school, by choice, by 7:30a).

On nights our oldest (6th) doesn't have later sports practices we try to have lights out at 8:30. We still have to wake him up at 7am. Other nights he has later practices then add shower/homework and it is closer to 10pm but usually not past that - more like 930/45.

I personally hate that the schedule is getting later because I like to wind down for a minute and head to bed early! Our 9yo still goes to bed at 8pm.

By the way, kids doctor said if we have to wake them up it means they likely are not getting enough sleep.

6th grader in bed at nine, but usually doesn't fall asleep until 10 or 10:15. Wakes up at 7 to 7:20. Same weekdays and weekends, but sometimes sleeps in til 8 on weekends.

We try to go to sleep at 11, but sometimes don't until 11:30. Get up at 7.

I’m shocked to hear some middle schoolers are going to bed before 9. That seems very early -for them to be compliant and willing

9 for my 8th grader except on one weeknight where she doesn’t get home from an activity until 9:15. Weekends are more flexible as she often sits until 10-11 for other families.
