Super Y

Hi all - we are new to travel soccer this year and are seeing Super Y tryouts coming up. Very basic questions here…what is it? How do you go on vacation over the summer since it takes up the majority of the time? How many teams does a club have in a single age group? Anything else I should know? Thanks!

It is a fun and hot way to get touches. It is expensive. You can go on vacations- they make the rosters large intentionally. It is a good way to be seen by other clubs if you are thinking about trying out in regular season

Super Y is a miserable experience where you say, “This is Super hot and Why did we sign up for this?”

If money isn’t an issue it’s ok. I think it’s better for the middle of the road player who gets to play against some better players. The top kids don’t get much competition. My experience past u13 it’s a waste of time.

Agree with the previous post as half of the practices (scheduled for 2 evenings/week) were canceled due to heat advisories. That being said, games were competitive and it helped my daughter and her rising U13 teammates get used to the 11x11 format before the fall. Now they are practicing for the tournament in freezing temps - go figure!

I think super y will need to end due to climate change. We paid a ton of money and I think half of our practices were canceled due to excessive heat. Games were canceled too. We are not signing up again this year.

^ me again. We were not offered refunds which makes sense, but definitely not returning.

Good advice here above. Super Y (USL Youth) is not great, but it’s not a complete waste of time. Can be a good way to check out another club, or just a way for the kids to have fun in the summer.

In terms of money, the entire Super Y season should cost less than 12 hours of “camp,” unless they qualify for nationals. We have three kids and have done Super Y with 4 clubs over the years.

We never planned our vacations around Super Y, we just always missed some games, and it was fine. Whereas we would never plan a short trip when there would be an ECNL game, for example.

Super Y should be pinned at the top. It comes up every year with the same questions and the same divided answers.

Here is the USL Youth website: https://www.usl-youth.com/about/. Super Y rebranded to USL Youth early this year. My kid has done it for the last 3 years (U11-U13). I don't know where others who commented play, but it's not that expensive for the whole summer ($600) as compared to other options for staying in shape over the summer. It's very low commitment - 2 practices per week and 1-2 games per week for about 6-8 weeks. You go to what you can; we miss 1-2 games every year so it's not like you have to plan summer vacations around it. Competition varies depending on which teams participate and who actually plays, but it's nice to get the extra touches in over the summer in a fun/low stress environment. I think it probably isn't as competitive beyond U13 or U14, but I don't know that for certain since I have a U13. If your team qualifies for the nationals tournament, you have a fun trip in Tampa in December.

Also not sure who has practices cancelled all the time - that happened a few days this past summer and game times moved around, but it just wasn't as bad as others make it sound the last 3 years. Yeah, it's hot outside, but it's called summer! If you have a kid under U14, I think it's a good experience overall.

What are other summer options for U14/15 at the RL level? Agree that Super Y talent level seems to decline at these ages.

You train and look for guest playing opportunities if your kid wants to play. Or signup to the college ID camp NOT to get notice primarily but to get touches and some scrimmages.

Arlington is the team most are talking about. Much higher than $600 and majority of practices cancelled. They practice on county turf fields and county would close fields if heat index was above certain temp.

+1 We are definitely not signing up for Super Why this year. We plan on leaving our current team after this season and why would we try out for their Super Why when a month later we will not be trying out for their regular season team.
