| Uhhh...yet another hole to plug in this shameful farce of an education in mcps. She is only able to name a handful of states. And don't come at me...I've been working with her for years to address all the other holes in her education |
| This sounds like just as much a you problem as it is MCPS. |
How? I remember learning to memorize the states and their corresponding capitals as a social studies assignment when I was an MCPS student. My parents had nothing to do with that. |
| Why didn't you teach her if its important to you? |
| What a strange thing to care about! |
| YouTube has the Fifty Nifty United States song that we all learned in 5th grade music class |
| At my grade school in the 80's wrting the states and capitals was given as a punishment. I was a good student that did not get in trouble. I never had to learn them. Somehow I survived graduate school and have a successful career. At the age of 50 I can name all of the states and maybe half of the capitals. |

Get a big foam map of the USA and have fun building it.
Make a second build focus on just those states that your kid has been to. Play this game as a family. https://www.amazon.com/Winning-Moves-Games-States-Coast/dp/B01N5WZQTJ/ref=asc_df_B01N5WZQTJ?mcid=d4b7bed1b0e63f74833ed414d719aba1&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693346295644&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6015803821758886446&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1019250&hvtargid=pla-380392016803&psc=1 |
Really? Don't recall getting it as a punishment but the whole class had to learn it, and doubt entire class got in trouble. Same for siblings they also had to learn them in ES. One went on to study geography, lol. |
OP here..just.bought it! Great suggestion! |
I still remember this song from 5th grade in MCPS in the late '90s. We all had to stand up and recite it individually. Probably that's done now because equity says making people memorize things or speak in public is mean. |
PP. I hope you like it. Just staring at puzzles and playing that game taught me a lot as a kid. I believe people need to know where all the states are but capitals are optional. There's a book for younger kids called "Scrambled States of America" that's funny and a game for all ages based on that. Also available on Amazon. |

In MCPS they learn the states and capitals in 5th grade, as part of the focus on American history. At least that’s when my now-senior learned them. It was a huge thing, for an entire quarter.
They learned the song, Fifty Nifty or whatever it is, and had to learn the states and capitals. And they broke into groups and did a big weeks-long project and presentation about their state, then they invited all the parents to come visit the exhibits. And they painted giant paper dolls of a famous person from their state. |

Mine knows them all thanks to youtube or tik-tok. He knows the locations and some of the capitals. He knows a lot more than I ever did that age.
He watches the videos where they ask a lot of general knowledge questions. He would do well on It's Academics. |
OP’s kid hasn’t finished 5th grade yet. You can’t seriously have a tantrum that a kid hasn’t learned a song that you didn’t learn till you were older than them. |
