I know that a few schools require them for ED/EA but what about sending them in voluntarily? DC is taking a few APs and earned almost all A's. The one B is in AP Stats and they intend to be a business major. The below advice from Sara Harberson gave me pause. DC is only applying to schools with at least a 20% admit rate.
1. If your grades are really strong first quarter of senior year, ask your guidance/college counselor to send them to all of your "early" colleges, whether you applied Early Decision or Early Action. Colleges with Early Decision and Early Action will be making decisions into early December (or later) before notifying applicants of admissions decisions. So even if your first quarter doesn't end until Thanksgiving, there's still time for the grades to make a difference. 2. "Really strong first quarter grades" translates into getting all A's or almost all A's. If you get a B or lower in a class that is important to your intended major, don't voluntarily send your grades. https://www.saraharberson.com/blog/first-quarter-grades-do-they-matter-for-early-decision-and-early-action |
No, my kid isn't and I'm not asking because I don't think it'll sway one way or another the schools dc applied to. Just sitting back and waiting for results and then tackle FAFSA and make decisions. Mine doesn't have the stats I typically see listed on here and we didn't go for extremely difficult schools to get into. Maybe UVA? But even that is a reach for dc anyway on their apps list. |
| I would not send a transcript with a B unless required. AP Stats is known as an easier AP class, so that would give me pause, especially for a business major. The exception would be if this quarter marks an improvement over prior semesters. |

Many, many high schools do not even have quarter grades. Worse, when a college demands first quarter grades, the counselor just pulls out of Canvas whatever's there.
I agree with PP, makes no sense to volunteer a B. |
| OP, do you mean sending them in after already submitting the application and it's pending? I wouldn't it may be confusing to send things afterwards if not asked specifically by the school. Maybe they don't want to look at the grades. |
| Our school (private); sends 'quarter grades' to all ea and ed schools. Very frustrating for us because it's a random cutoff date where having only 1 graded assignment can skew the grade. My typical high stats kid will have a B on their quarter report shared with colleges. They know their semester-end grade will be higher, but it is what it is- and unfortunately, i do think the B will affect ed outcome, given the competitive nature of admissions. |

My kid just applied ED to one colllege and EA to three colleges. ALL of them have emailed my child to sign into a portal that shows what's left before an application is complete-- and all of them have first quarter grades on the checklist. Maybe you can wait to see if a college asks for the grades, but you probably do take a risk that the college considers it an incomplete application and doesn't even review the application.
My child is at a very top private that is absolutely clear that they will send out first quarter grades. And really, one B in stats isn't going to kill your child's chances. But not sending in grades at all could lead admissions to think either the application is incomplete, or that the first quarter grades are being hidden because they are a disaster (and one B is definitely not a disaster). |
| My kid has an UW 4.0...so he did send in 1st quarter grades to show---it continued into Senior year. |
| We were just last week asked for some additional information from an Oxford college, so the HS counselor sent in an "interim" report that just covers the first half of the first semester, she prefaced it with the fact it may not reflect end of semester grades. |
Our public does the same and my kid will have one B+ (just missed that A- but a tenth of point) in physics C. Her ED school does not require first quarter grades so she's hoping they won't put much weight on this, but worried nonetheless |
| Pretty much any AO will tell you not to send anything extra unless explicitly asked. |
But if your HS autosends? Do schools that don’t require 1st quarter grades for ED/EA just disregard? Or can they impact the decision? Seems a little unfair to penalize some students whose schools autosend when others only send the ones with straight As. |
Same....my HS Senior increased rigor this year and had a 4.0 so we absolutely sent first quarter grades to show that rigor is continuing into Senior year. My DC applied all ED/EA so they won't get a chance to see end of Semester grades, only first quarter. |
our auto sends too. but we've been told they will ignore. |
Not correct when it comes to first quarter grades |
