Trying to lose those last 10 lbs in peri

Anonymous
I've always thought that losing those last 10 lbs was impossible. I'm in my early 40s, 5'7''. Was about 143-145. Now about 138 consistently. Would love to be 133-135 and for the first time in years I believe I can do it.

My husband got a high cholesterol reading and changed his diet, which motivated me because I wanted to change what we had (or didn't have) in the kitchen, and I also wanted to outdo him a little bit (we're competitive).

So I was careful about sugar, dessert, high fats, and mostly snacks (chips, cheese-its, etc... which I now realize I may have had about 300-400 calories of fairly often).

With eliminating salty snacks, focusing on veggies at most meals, trying to eat full fat yogurt/cottage cheese/some additional protein, I found I was able to drop 5 lbs fairly quickly while still having the occasional drink, dessert, or onion rings in moderation. I also stopped purchasing all lunches except salad, and bringing salad to work (don't worry, I eat tons of fats in salad and they keep me full).

Is this really the secret? Just discipline? Or have I not yet hit the wall of peri and in a few years it'll all return?

Exercise. No need to go overboard, just lift some weights, walk, squats, etc.

Eat less than you burn and you’ll lose weight. However you do that, there you go. You are doing it the healthy way, so that’s great. As you age you may have to eat less to get the same results. Or work out more.

Early 40s? Sorry, you’re not there yet. I was still hot in my early 40s

Your weight is fine, you don't need to lose any. But you're not at the age where it gets really hard to lose weight either. If you want to lose more, this is the time. Work on strength training too for bone health.

This is such a pernicious myth.

What kind of salad do you eat? Do you buy it from restaurants or make it yourself?

I found it easy to lose weight in early 40s. Hit 48, put on 2lbs within a week. Then proceeded to put on 8lbs more over the next 2 years. Same exercise and same diet. It was completely due to peri-menopause. I have to eat about a third less than I did to get back to my early 40s weight

Good for anyone who wants to lose weight and takes effort and even more if has success. This said, after losing weight in 40s can be hard for some and doable for others, but if in 50 and lose weight (not keep weight, but lose), then I definitely give applause as that is so hard and at times just depressing as do all the right things but your body just says, no, you are no longer 40!

You have had a good metabolism all your life. That’s the secret. You’ve been able to eat chips and cheez its and sugar and still be 140 at 5’7? I eat WAY healthier and am 165 at 5’4. But my metabolism sucks and has since I was a child.

You didn’t crack any code. You just cracked YOUR code. Count yourself fortunate you’ve gotten as far as you have in life without needing to diet.

Ha! I thought the same exact thing. Just wait until mid-50s. You can do everything you are doing…it won’t matter much.

You have to increase protein and decrease carbs.

Honest question: Are women really this terrified of putting on an extra 10-15 pounds once they hit menopause or peri? What do you imagine will happen if you do? That your husbands will leave you all en masse? I see these posts all the time, but there can’t be this many women who care so much about this, right?

Unfortunately, this is all correct. But it's good to get a start on good dietary practices now before the real perimenopause/menopause weight gain and weight redistribution kicks in.
