There is one supplement. In Common App, it is located in UVA's Questions, under the Academics tab.

"In around 250 words, please answer the following question.

What about your individual background, perspective, or experience will serve as a source of strength for you or those around you at UVA? Feel free to write about any past experience or part of your background that has shaped your perspective and will be a source of strength, including but not limited to those related to your community, upbringing, educational environment, race, gender, or other aspects of your background that are important to you.*"

Forgot to add, one can respond to this question in many different ways. For most, rather than thinking of it as an identity/diversity prompt (which it can be, for those who wish to respond that way), I'd look at this as a Why Us essay. Connect your background to the how you would contribute at UVA.

Dean J has said many times that if they wanted a Why UVA response they would directly ask for one; they know why you want to attend UVA. This is not a why UVA prompt.

"Source of strength" means... what exactly? I'd like to hear ideas. I could see this as a discussion of personal qualities that are strengths, vs "source" of strength. Thoughts?

Such as a kid who is ND and taps into creative pursuits that align with his strengths?

I'm of the belief this is a "explain your diversity here" prompt. This was crafted after the Supreme Court decision. Dean J has been very clear if you have nothing to share, no big deal. However, it's hard for an interested student to leave any opportunity blank so it's understandable ppl fill it with the "why us" type of stuff. Probably just be ignored / not hurt your application.

Instead of "why us" couldn't students chose to basically make it a supplemental personal essay? Like on their second choice topic, spun as their "source of strength?"

If they've repeatedly said no "why us" and a student feels they really have no meaningful diversity to list, then just brag on themselves for a while.

This isn't the one to leave blank. That is the "what is your special connection" to UVA essay listed as optional. It's a way around the no legacy consideration law.

There are 2 different essays!

One is the source of strength one. The 2nd is the connection to the school one (optional).

If your kid really has no idea how to answer this question, they do not belong at UVA. This is a variant of a standard interview question and t15 ivy types have a variant of this question too. Come on. It’s not that hard.

Maybe it's just my lens. Sounds like a mental health question rather than a personal strength question.

It’s the veiled diversity/community essay snd very poorly worded imo. Question by committee!

What a truly BS question.
