An easy question. PP is right that it’s a question you’re usually asked in interviews. What makes you a good candidate? What skills/characteristics/talents do you have that will add? It’s not a trick question.

Exactly the same way the diversity question is still legal after the SCOTUS decision. The law HB48 says

No public institution of higher education shall provide any manner of preferential treatment in the admissions decision to any student applicant on the basis of such student's legacy status or such student's familial relationship to any donor to such institution.

As used in this section, "legacy status" means the familial relationship of an individual applying for admission to an institution of higher education to an alumnus of such institution.

So the question doesn’t ask about legacy status - it asks about an individual special connection and how that has prepared the person to contribute to UVA. By focusing on the contribution/benefit to UVA, rather than to the applicant, it skirts the law.

because only a few states have banned legacy status at publics and even fewer from privates (CA is the test case)
