Forgot to add, one can respond to this question in many different ways. For most, rather than thinking of it as an identity/diversity prompt (which it can be, for those who wish to respond that way), I'd look at this as a Why Us essay. Connect your background to the how you would contribute at UVA.

Dean J has said many times that if they wanted a Why UVA response they would directly ask for one; they know why you want to attend UVA. This is not a why UVA prompt.

I'm of the belief this is a "explain your diversity here" prompt. This was crafted after the Supreme Court decision. Dean J has been very clear if you have nothing to share, no big deal. However, it's hard for an interested student to leave any opportunity blank so it's understandable ppl fill it with the "why us" type of stuff. Probably just be ignored / not hurt your application.

Instead of "why us" couldn't students chose to basically make it a supplemental personal essay? Like on their second choice topic, spun as their "source of strength?"

If they've repeatedly said no "why us" and a student feels they really have no meaningful diversity to list, then just brag on themselves for a while.

There are 2 different essays!

One is the source of strength one. The 2nd is the connection to the school one (optional).

I thought they got rid of the second one after the State banned legacy connection.
Is it actually still there?

So, can DC just skip the connection to UVA essay and leave the space blank? He doesn't really have any meaningful connection

Mine left the connection to UVA one blank and got in EA last year.

The College Essay Guy writes about this.

This isn't the one to leave blank. That is the "what is your special connection" to UVA essay listed as optional. It's a way around the no legacy consideration law.

Ah! Good catch

It’s probably better to skip at the end to fabricate something. I have heard the admissions officers talk about it and they said it’s fine to skip it and it will not hurt you.

In fact, the advice was not to put stuff unless it was legacy or facility kid. They don’t care if u attended football games or your aunt lives in Charlottesville. We were instructed not that type of stuff

This is a link from last year.

Can anyone who has actually seen the U-Va supplements in the common app confirm that there is till an optional "connection to U-Va" question.
For those of you whose kids did it last year, that was before the State law went into effect prohibiting state universities from considering legacy.

It's still there. DC is applying this year

+1

Not the best question. Possible answers - religious /God
-family member
-interior strength or attributes (positivity, optimism, social networks and penchant for making friendships)
-habits and interests (reading, self introspection, walking, exercise, work, meditating) etc

May your applicant have better reading comprehension than you do.
UVA has the same questions this year - hence why The College Essay Guy hasn't done an update.

Recommendation - Go create a Common App account for yourself, do a college search, chose UVA, open it, scroll down to wriring requirements and you will see that it says:

Writing requirements

This college does not use a writing supplement for any additional writing requirements.

Then, go to the My Colleges tab.
Select UVA
Go to Questions
Scroll and you will see:

If you hit coninute you will see:

Can someone explain how that question is still legal given legislation banning legacy preferences (and I'm asking as someone whose kid is a double legacy)

If your kid really has no idea how to answer this question, they do not belong at UVA. This is a variant of a standard interview question and t15 ivy types have a variant of this question too. Come on. It’s not that hard.

Maybe it's just my lens. Sounds like a mental health question rather than a personal strength question.

Your lens indeed.
