Forgot to add, one can respond to this question in many different ways. For most, rather than thinking of it as an identity/diversity prompt (which it can be, for those who wish to respond that way), I'd look at this as a Why Us essay. Connect your background to the how you would contribute at UVA.[/quote]

Dean J has said many times that if they wanted a Why UVA response they would directly ask for one; they know why you want to attend UVA. This is not a why UVA prompt. [/quote]

I'm of the belief this is a "explain your diversity here" prompt.  This was crafted after the Supreme Court decision.  Dean J has been very clear if you have nothing to share, no big deal.   However, it's hard for an interested student to leave any opportunity blank so it's understandable ppl fill it with the "why us" type of stuff.  Probably just be ignored / not hurt your application. Instead of "why us" couldn't students chose to basically make it a supplemental personal essay? Like on their second choice topic, spun as their "source of strength?"

There are 2 different essays!

One is the source of strength one.  The 2nd is the connection to the school one (optional).[/quote]
