I don't eat meat anymore, sometimes eggs and sometimes fish (really only sushi and smoked salmon, occasionally). I find myself eating too many carbs. I'm on semaglutide and not gaining, but also losing at a snail's pace, I think because of the carb-heavy diet. How do you eat a plant based diet that is not too carb heavy? For instance I absolutely love toast with various things on it (veggies, cheese, vegan spreads I make...), that is my favorite thing to eat. |
It's hard, but salad and soup are great lunches. |
Carbs are not the enemy, but you need to be sure you are focusing on whole foods and limit consumption of overly processed foods including white flour and sugar.

Have you tried egg life wraps? I eat them almost every day in place of bread.
I also make wraps with cottage cheese and eggs baked in the oven. Use that same base as a pizza crust. Cottage cheese can be a base for a lot of things. I melt some cheese, veg pepperoni and tomato sauce for a pizza bowl. Or mix cottage cheese with diced eggs and avocado for a twist on an egg salad. Other things I eat a lot of: -Edamame -Vegetarian chickpea caesar salad -Eggs - fried, hardboiled, scrambled etc -String cheese -Tons of tofu in all forms Not the best long term I am sure, but helping me to focus on protein vs carbs: -Protein coffee daily with a protein drink and cold brew -Occasional quest chips or protein bars |
I am vegan and eat mostly whole grains, beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes and cooked greens. I eat extremely carb-heavy but all whole foods with lots of fiber. I have lost 35 pounds over the last year eating this way. Stay away from processed foods and breads. |
Vegetarian diets do tend to be carb heavy - I used to eat a ton of beans but it was too much for my perimenopausal body.
You can try replacing the toast with low carb bread or a low carb tortilla - just don’t go too crazy at first because it’s a lot of fiber at once. I eat very similarly to PP above - lots of cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, salads and soups. Love using a protein shake as my coffee creamer. Don’t shy away from larger volumes of veggies, sometimes it takes a big ass salad to fill up! |
I don't really eat bread, although crackers can be a weakness. Salads and whole grains are my diet staples---mostly brown rice, farro, and quinoa. I'm a pescatarian and, aside from fish, like eggs and beans for protein. I try to avoid dairy aside from cheese and yogurt in moderation, mostly because I'm lactose intolerant and pay an unpleasant price when I eat too much of it. |
Switch to Ezekiel sprouted bread. |
Drink a lot more water |
Definitely drink more water. Most people are nit hungry, just thirsty. It will fill up your stomach. |
Peanut butter on apples
Nuts I love toast too. Buit maybe try rice cakes to get the spreads/dips/toppings. |
First of all you cannot have a "balanced plant based diet" that doesn't exist. Nobody with any knowledge ever says it does. Second of all, fish is meat. Fish are not plants or fungi or bacteria. Third, you never lose fat on a high carb diet. You can lose weight, and get scrawny, but you will have what they call the "skinny-fat" look, like a marathon runner with drooping skin and weak thin muscles. |
Are you local? Try vegetable and butcher meal delivery for a while. Once you see the variety of healthy meals for a few months, you will have a lot of ideas you can copy |
Are egg life wraps highly processed? |
I am amazed how the definition of meat has changed. I am 60 and when I was growing up meat was essentially mammals (beef, pork, venison, lamb…), poultry was birds (chicken, goose, pheasant, turkey….) and fish was its own category. Now, somehow meat is all of it. |
