ECNL Mid-Atlantic League Cup?

Anonymous
Anyone know what the ECNL Mid-Atlantic League Cup is? It's on the ECNL app (only on the girls side). Looks like there is a League Cup for each conference. This is not the ECNL Conference Cup. Appears to be something new they are rolling out, maybe?

Mini tournament that happens over the season. "Pods" of three teams that play game, winner of the Pod plays a semi-final against other Pod winners with a final afterwards. Winner gets and automatic bid to National Tournament. As a result Mid-Atlantic Conference will only have four National slots by standing with the fifth being the tourney winner. Didn't really get a whole lot more info than that (like if the winner of the Cup is also a top four team, does the fifth place team still go, etc.).

4 national playoff slots total, top 3 and tournament winner

What happens if the tournament winner is in the top 3? Only 3 go? Down from 5 last year? That seems like a drastic cut.

No.

If 6-12 win, 5 does not go. If 1-5 wins then 1-5 go.

4 playoff spots - one of them is guaranteed through the in-season tournament. MA went from 5 playoff spots to 4 playoff spots, not that drastic.

If the tournament winner is 1st, then 2nd, 3rd and 4th go to playoffs. If the tournament winner finishes 8th, then 1st, 2nd and 3rd plus 8th go to playoffs.

Sounds like an ECNL money grab to me. Just like the ECNL Heritage project.

Only 4 spots, so if the MA cup winner is seeded 5 or higher they bump down #4 for a champions league spot.

*5 or lower depending on how you look at it.

what money is being grabbed? It's more games for age groups that typically don't have them because of high school

It sounds like ECNL has created a tournament that has potential to affect league standings. Good if you like ECNL bad if you're a local club that would normally run a tournament on that date.

Trolling aint easy over here. Clearly not a money grab more of a save face for a mediocre conference that needs justification for a 5th spot so its making its clubs jump through more hoops. Get a set ECNL and just take the playoff spot away from the conference, they are not worthy

We are using a tournament for some games. There is no money grab. It's a good opportunity if you're not one of the top teams.

The purpose of ECNL is to give players exposure to college coaches. An additional in season tournament will give more exposure so this sounds like a good thing.

As far as “taking away” a playoff spot, that’s not really an issue because any team can still attend the end of season event as a showcase. No loss of exposure opportunities.

I think you misunderstood what I was highlighting.

ECNL has created a tournament type event and provided an incentive for teams to participate.

This takes away from local clubs ability to host (and make money from) a tournament.

If you like ECNL I'm sure this sounds great. Personally I'd rather see local clubs run tournaments so they get the $$$ to invest into local player development.
