I'm running this evening and expecting rain. What should I wear to be comfortable for an hour? What should I wear when it gets colder?
I know Google has the answer but that's not working today for me. |
typical advice is to dress as though it is 20 degrees warmer than it is - you need to experiment to see what works for you.
get a good windbreaker that breathes for the rain. i usually layer a sweatshirt under that in the cold. good luck! |
For tonight, just make sure to have a hat. It makes running in the rain much more comfortable when drops aren't falling directly on your face.
Cold is pretty easy and will come gradually. Just add a layer as needed. |
Long time runner - here's what I wear:
60s and above - sports bra and shorts 55-60 - sleeveless shirt and shorts High 40s-mid 50 - short sleeve shirt and shorts Low/mid 40s - Long sleeve shirt and shorts High 20s/30s - Long sleeve shirt, long pants, gloves and earband Rarely run below 25 degrees but if I do I add a long sleeve zip up over my shirt and double up on gloves and socks, and use warming packs in my gloves. I don't run in rain unless its warmish outside and the rain is light. I hate running when its cold and rainy. |
In today's temps I'd wear as little as possible, with as few seams as possible. Wet clothes chafe a LOT. If you have BodyGlide or something, run that alongside the undersides of your upper arms if they rub against your sides and you have seams there.
When it's colder - same. When it is very cold and wet, inner layer with water resistant outer layer and I wouldn't run for an hour in that weather. A twisted ankle four miles in on a 40 degree day with strong wind gusts and rain, and I'd have to hobble four miles back, slowly freezing. That's one thing you learn when you start running. Be selective about yuor longer run daysa nd have the good judgment to reduce the length or time of your runs if the weather is truly nasty - move around your longer run that week. |
There is a website called dressmyrun.com. I use that in the winter as a guide - I usually wear one extra layer. On my Garmin app I make notes about the weather and what I wore. Usually I will start with gloves or an ear band and remove them. Make sure you have deep pockets in your leggings.
In rain I will wear normal summer clothes and a hat, but avoiding puddles and getting drenched while running is not fun. I’d skip and go tomorrow if it’s raining hard. Never run in a lightning storm. That’s so dangerous. There’s some good advice on hot, wet, and cold runs from Coach Bennett in the Nike Run Club app. |
It’s July- what are you calling cold? I would probably run in whatever you usually do, but second the suggestion of a hat- it is really nice to keep rain out of your face. I would rather run when it is actually raining compared to 95% humidity. |
Same, same. In today's weather, if I really wanted to run in the rain, I'd wear a light tank top and shorts. To me, 50s through 80s are shorts weather. Tank tops in the 80s, long-sleeved dri-fit in the 50s. 40s, capris and a long-sleeved dri-fit. 20s and 30s, tights, long-sleeved dri-fit, gloves, an earwarmer. In the 20s, probably a quarter-zip on top. |
I’d wear the same thing I always wear and just be happy it’s raining. I don’t start wearing layers beyond shorts and shirt until it’s in the 40s. |
