Sugar addict

Anonymous
I am a complete sugar addict. How do I overcome that? I was on semaglutide for a few months (lost all needed weight, maintaining since) but even then that did not change. I would eat less, but still a lot of sugar and was craving it. Same now, I can't seem to kick it. Cherries are working as a good substitute as I love them and they are in season, but what will I do when that's over?

Keep looking for substitutes. Make low-sugar banana bread or other low-sugar dessert to keep at home. Buy Smart PoP brand of Kettle popcorn. Have iced tea with Splenda or homemade simple syrup instead of soda.

Some people will disagree with me on this, but I have to earn my dessert. So I only get a cookie if I weigh a certain weight (on the lower end of my 3 pound spectrum), I have exercised, and eat a salad or vegetable heavy meal for lunch/dinner. I also plan my day in the AM and hold myself accountable by logging it on LoseIt or MFP.

Look up podcasts by Dr. Mark Hyman.

Look up Glucose Goddess book.

Good luck.

ADHD meds work for this. often its the hyperactive/ impulse / inattentive part that makes one over eat and pine for sugars 24/7. Try a stimulant. especially if you have other adhd symptoms (exec functioning issues, trouble sleeping, anxiety, forget things, lose things, etc. )

This is all about dopamine and D2 receptors in the brain. Sugar, heroine and other addictive substances, unmediated ADHD, all involve problems created in the same part of the brain.

I have ADHD (diagnosed as an adult at 42) and 100% addicted to sugar as well. It's how I medicated myself without knowing what was going on. I'm on Wegovy to lose the weight, which is going great. I'm also trying some ADHD med combo's to see what will work best for me. Strattera was okay, but Adderall appears to be the fix for me.

I've also found if I start each meal with protein I'm less likely to crave sugar. No clue why, but that appears to happen to me. Keeping a food journal with how you feel after each item can help you pinpoint issues as well. Yes, it's a lot of work, but it can be as simple as a note in a Google doc.

Stop eating sugar. You will go thru withdrawal but eventually not crave it. Unless you go back on the roller coaster.
If it's truly sugar addiction then you can't eat it in a controlled way for very long. Just don't.

Try Zollipops or other similar candy

I substitute with seltzer and a splash of juice or fruit. I’m slowly training my mind to not crave it.

Good luck, op

Adderall eventually made my sugar cravings worse in the evenings. Watch out.

There’s a 12 step program like AA for this if you’re interested. Www.Foodaddicts.org

I love cake, in a way that nobody understands. I’m also prediabetic. Two things have helped me significantly cut down sugar intake: I beat myself up every time I indulge in cake (this helped me so much because now I’m afraid of myself!) and I have a rule where I am allowed as much cake as I want if I’m invited to a birthday party or event.

Another thing that has helped is my daily “treat” is cottage cheese/tahini/maple syrup all mashed up.

I’m very happy and proud of myself that I cut down refined sugar consumption so much.
