If you are sick but not like dying sick ie a cold or mild strep or something - do you still work out?
My sibling and I are on opposite sides and wondering who is right. They work out every day no matter what. They had Covid and still went running even though her body hurt. I feel like when you are sick you need to let your body rest and recharge and working out will make it worse. Thoughts? |
OMG her position is insane. You need to let your body rest and recover. A cold maybe doesn't matter but more serious than that? No. |
If you aren’t training for something specific, just rest. If you are, it depends on your goals and type of event. At that point you titrate accordingly.
Your sibling is an idiot for running while experiencing any significant symptoms from Covid |
Op - sibling wasn’t out doors exposing anybody. Indoor running on treadmill. In case that is what you were worried about. |
I always heard if symptoms are above neck it’s fine to work out. If it’s in your chest, better to rest. |
Cold, yes, I work out (try to sweat out the germs), and drink lots of fluids
Fever, strep (what is "mild strep?" you either have it or you don't), no, I wouldn't, I would rest and drink fluids |
NP here but I'd worry more about stressing her body too much during covid and potentially increasing likelihood of long covid. Rest is part of healing. |
I don't exercise if I feel under the weather. If my cold is getting better sure, but if I'm in the midst of it and need a box of tissues within arm's reach all day, or have a headache, I'll just take a rest.
I'm 5 lbs overweight and having trouble dropping them, though, so ymmv. |
Yes, I workout when sick, but not as hard. I typically run with a cold but not high fever. When I had covid and energy was zapped + fever, I did daily core and some light weights but held off on running. |
Op - sometimes I think my siblings dedication to working out is admirable. I don’t have the same fortitude or mental strength, especially when I am sick.
But sibling is 15 pounds thinner than I am so maybe they are doing something right! |
You had a fever and still did weights and core work? Why? I think it’s obsessive and not good for the body to work out when ill. Your body needs rest and recovery. My friend who has a running streak still ran through a horrible stomach bug, throwing up as she ran, just to not break her streak. Makes zero sense to me. |
I took a week off from cycling when I had Covid last year. The 2 weeks after that were kind of annoying with sinus headaches and a lot of congestion, so I just avoided high intensity rides.
But I am not as obsessive about weight as OP and her sister seem to be. |
I’m a teacher so I had 5 or so colds this past school year and if I felt OK on cold meds I worked out even if it was easier. |
This is pretty much what I do. |
I always run, even when I have the flu or covid. Feels pretty crappy during it but I never regret it. |
